I3/I5/I7

I want something pretty much the best i can get for my money and want it to last as long as possible before upgrading again.

i5 750 or i7 920 plus OC to 4GHz full-stop. Forget all others. Personally I would take one of the two motherboard CAT suggest and go i5 750 if crossfire is what interest me and with a sub £500 budget.

X-Fire tbh doesn't interest me in the slightest.
If that is the case, you can just get this:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-209-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1495

It can overclock i5 750 to 4GHz, but can't xfire/SLI like the two boards CAT recommended because the 2nd 16x PCI-E slot would only be able to run in 4 lanes (aka not enough to run a graphic card).

Total cost around £365 (excluding shipping)

While a i7 920 would cost around £527 (excluding shipping):

Will my cooler be adequate for whatever i went for ? i like to overclock hassle free and want something that is capable of reaching 4gig without a lot of messing.

as stated you could recoup about 200 quid by selling cpu/mobo and ram on mm

so upgrade would be about 327 for i7... nice :)

I got £200 in the bag for my old stuff to a mate, would my 600w psu do the job and the H50 cooler just thinking of the extra heat.

I think am heading more towards the I7 860 atm for the lower power usage as the 920 is rather hight.

Don't get tricked by Intel's labeling! It's Intel's usual method of fooling people that don't know better or how to overclock into paying more for their CPU. Although they label 860 and 870 as "i7", in reality there are the same Lynnfield architecture as i5 750. The true i7 architecture is actually Bloomfield...that uses triple-channel memory.

The chances are a i5 750 at the same clock speed as the i7 860/870 would most like be same performance, much like Core2Duo E8400/E8500/E8600 at the same clock speed would perform basically the same..

I still think you should just get i5 750 and OC to 4.0GHz and save yourself £60.

Its looking like that listed below tbh, I hate pc's when you got the upgrade bug as it pulls you one way or the other, one time its I5 then i think i want HT on it for encoding etc so I7 haha, then its back to the 860 then back to I5 never ending circle, i want something that will do me for a good few years so i think the extra spent might be wise.

Will my H50-1 cooler be sufficient to cool the 920 i would like to get as close too 4 gig as possible.

This is over your budget, but you could sell off your old parts to help fund it.

Thats the route that i took when upgrading from s775.

If you have made up your mind on i7 920, I would suggest you get this motherboard that I suggested with the i7 920 build before:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-235-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1692

This Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R is the updated version of the Gigabyte GA-X58-UD3R (used in OCUK's i5 750 overclock 4.0GHz bundle) which added 2xUSB 3.0 ports and 2xSATA 6Gb/s.

The Asus P6T SE Intel X58 may cost £6 less, but it has no USB 3.0 port nor SATA 6Gb/s.

Wait for 6 core.
Q6600 is still plenty good.
Also if you wanna see a huge difference, you'd need to OC the i7 and for that you'll need another 40-60quid for cooling and heck knows maybe better case if your current one is bad.

Sure i7 is better, but it will get outdated pretty soon and your current rig isn't bad either just yet.

The first 6 core intel chips will be the best part of £1000.00.

Its more that the opportunity has come at the right time tbh, mates pc packed in so he needs new stuff and he asked about mine, i got £200 for it so the upgrade isn't that major and it will last me for a few years yet, with the added bonus i guess of being able to put another 5850 in down the line when they much cheaper.
