i5 2500k probable issue?

right, memtest is now running. what am i looking out for?

Errors - they will appear in red bands.

A complete run through will take approx 40 minutes - test 5 and 8 are the most intensive. You will need it to run it overnight if nothing shows up within the first run.

yesterday, lovely. everything was fine.

last night, decided to move my pc from the floor to a higher surface.

today? won't stable boot into windows. \o/

basically, i use OC genie on a MSI P67A-C45 (not B3 revision, i was a month too early) motherboard to achieve a 4.2ghz overclock.

this has been fine and stable since may.

however, on trying to boot today it would make it through the whole boot but then freeze after 10-15 seconds of use. it's also just failed to make it to the msi splash screen a few times. seems random.

i decided to take the overclock off both the cpu and the RAM but still, it's not working.

i'm currently using the pc in safe mode.

any ideas on what the problem is?

If you can run in safe mode without any problem then it's a driver or software problem..

ah. right. if this is the case, how do you reckon i should going about solving it? :)

Has it never crashed/hung in safe mode?

If it hasn't then Davefran makes a valid point - it could very well be a driver issue. Although, ruling out the memory is still advisible given the problem.

Are your chipset drivers, gfx drivers etc all upto date?

Do you have lots of apps running in the backround and peripherals? If you do and they're not necessary start removing them. Even if there only semi necessary try removing them for now.

Once all drivers have been updated and unessessary drivers and app removed - slowly add the devices and apps back. One at a time and test for stability - so that you can identify the driver/app conflict when it's installed.

Or if you're fully backed up go for a new install - it's usually faster but leave only essential peripherals attached and make sure you download the latest drivers first.

Once re-installed add devices and app incrementally.

Obviously, if the problem still persists then you will have to start troubleshooting the hardware again.

EDIT: How did the memtest run go?

If you have tested in safe node and it hangs try your hdd in another pc if you have mod.

Also if you have a lower power graphics card try that. You will know if its your psu as even a cheap one should run your cpu and a low end graphics card

or do you have a friend with a psu or gpu. Does your mobo have one on board.

it has never crashed in safe mode. well, it certainly doesn't crash when i try to do something :D

with regards to peripherals i've got a mouse and keyboard attached wirelessly. that's it. monitor is connected to the gpu via hdmi. that's really all that's attached at the moment.

with regards to drivers, what do you suggest i look at updating?

memtest ran for 13 hours (i was busy :D) and managed 22 passes with no errors. can we rule the RAM out now then?

it doesn't hang in safe mode unfortunately, just when i load into full on windows.

i do have a lower powered graphics card, one of those 20 quid AMD jobbies. reckon that'll pinpoint the PSU as the issue?

When you change ati drivers do you use ati uninstall software?

i don't. i install 'on top' of the old drivers. well, just download the catalyst software and let it do it's job.

wow lot has happened since last I checked this!
So it seems memory is ok?
but if you are ok with safe mode, that may be because there is something wrong with windows/drivers.
I would re-install windows tbh.
(After backing up ocf)

all my stuff like games e.t.c is on the one hard drive. :(

luckily i've got a 2tb one to back it up to.

so are we suggesting a fresh install of windows is the next step?

ok :D

any tips on the quickest way of moving 800gb worth of files from one hard drive to the other?

drag and drop? :D

As long as you can get the HDD recognised and functioning in your computer then you can select and copy or drag and drop - which ever you prefer.

You can do the whole batch at once or do selected batches/folders at a time.

As your system is a bit unpredictable saving in batches may be advisible.

yeah, both hdds are working fine in safe mode.

just did a test to see how long it'd take to move it all in one batch. 1 day.

1 whole day. :(
