I5 4670k to I7 4790k

Its a Gigabyte z87-hd3 socket 1150.
I got a good price on my i5 ,won a couple of quid on the gee gees and looked at something to tide me over for a bit. I can see the difference in comparing both chips,i believe this i7 paired with the 1070 should see me thru at least the next 18mths what you reckon mate?

So you bought a £300+ old chip to fit a £100 old motherboard? If you plan on upgrading again in 18 months it makes it even more of a crazy decision. The next upgrade you do will pretty much be a rig overhaul.

No denying the 4790k is a good processor as I've got one but I wouldn't be buying one brand new right now.

Im not planning on upgrading in 18 mths,i said it should see me thru the next 18 months hopefully longer if i can get away with the i7 4790k for a lot longer id be more than happy bud.
I use a U2715H a real beautiful monitor with it all and the EVGA FTW 1070 is a great card.
I got just under £150 for my 2yr old i5..so i got a brand new top CPU for 150 quid, that doesn,t seem a bad price to me?

Ive been lucky my i7 4770k was more or less a straight swap for my i5 4690k.

I had been looking for a cheap 2nd hand 4790k but nothing came up so when my mate upgraded to x99 as his board died I got offered his delided 4770k and he took my 4690k

( so far ive got it running 4.4Ghz and the temps are lower than my old 4690k so going to see what I can get!! )

4770k and 4790k are both still very good cpu's and should last you a couple of years with a good overclock.

I don't think it's a crazy decision. Some games show a big gain in an i7 over an i5 - Fallout 4 springs to mind, and seeing as I've already put 120 hours into that and counting, going i7 with fast DDR4 was the best decision I made in my new build. (Fallout 4 also love faster ram)

Ive noticed a big jump in a few games going from the 4690k to the 4770k.

Im fairly impressed with it I never thought the i7 would make much of a difference.

so far Mad Max and Gta V have taken a jump in FPS ive maxed the setting out on Mad Max and im still getting a nice 100FPS

Hmm I am considering the same jump very soon (better for my 1070, and plus VR) but I don't think I necessarily follow the 'just get a 6700k' perspective.

Surely the outlay is going to be for a new set of RAM, motherboard and CPU. This has got to be far greater than just finding a cheap 4790k right, perhaps second hand? I think I might just stick to the latter...

yea that was my thoughts. I had been keeping my eyes open for a cheap 4790k.

A few weeks back my mates motherboard died so after fighting with Asus hes went the x99 route and offered me his delidded 4770k for my 4690k ;) I wasnt going to argue

There's nothing wrong in doing that as he avoided having to upgrade everything else, When he does do his next move it'll also include the need to buy new ram as well as a motherboard and possibly an OS so doing what he did makes perfect sense as he's now sporting the top of the range Haswell chip which will continue to handle the latest games for years to come thanks to the extra threads and the likelihood that titles on the new api's will take advantage of them...

If someone was buying everything ie: cpu, motherboard & ram then yes it makes sense to buy the latest generation of hardware ie Skylake, But when you already own most of it no, Skylake is not a massive leap over the Devils canyon i7 and not worth the outlay of having to replace everything mentioned hence why I haven't done it and probably why you haven't too..

Cheers Nashathedog..You put it way better than i ever could.
Thats exactly my reason i purchased the I7 Canyon chip

this was also the reason I was keeping my eyes open for a cheap 4790k I wasnt looking for a 4770k but when I got offered the one I got I took it. its been a free upgrade for me granted its not the 4790k but its been a free upgrade and its running 4.4 sweet im tempted to push it a little more.

You've got a cpu that'll last years, it was a good move.

There's no real difference apart from a couple of features such as vt-d that Haswell turned off in the K-series and Devils canyon turned back on, By getting a delided 4770k you removed any advantage the 4790k had for gaming etc.

I had a 4770k originally and even under water with added voltage it was only 100% stable at 4.1 ghz, I was able to sell it and only needed to add 30 quid to get a 4790k which sits at 4.5 with no additional voltage under air. There will be no performance difference between a 4770k and a 4790k when clocked the same.
