Im currently running a old but still blisteringly fast for me......i7 3770k overclocked to 4.6 on air.

So someones got me a ROG 450 f motherboard for xmas which seems to be a good budget choice of a board.

So i am well and truly out of the loop with cpus these days.

What sort of Cpu should i be aiming for at the budget end but at least equivilent to what i have please.

Any advice welcome....

ps im thinking at least a 2700x?
Cheers people

There better be II in end.
Because original is branded scam garbage with worser VRM than in lowly Asrock B450 Pro4.
That outdated 2700X at stock could literally overheat that VRM good only for max 65W TDP CPUs.
Unless just wanting old hardware when bought, Zen2 architecture CPU should be starting point.
That's important especially for gaming.

not sure mate its from rain forest place shop so its easy to return

I was running a 3770k and GTX 680 in Jan 2021.

Then the Easter hunt began (GPU)… I am now running a 5800X and RTX 3080.

I am very happy with my new set up. If you have the budget or can push a little more, go big and it will last for years.

return the mb if u can as intels the best value and performance these days. The only reason to go amd is if you already had a am4 mb which saves some pennys.

i got the version II board so im good to go.......cant be assed to return it if its ok.......im gonna get a second hand cpu to make it more affordable.

i think the 3700 is within my price range atm....as im trying to do a budget upgrade for the moment.
Yeah definitely good advice from @Chaos666 to get the 3700X, that should tide you over for a good few years. You should also make sure your have a decent set of DDR4 to go with it as that does help Ryzen 3000 significantly.

You ideally want to aim for 3600mhz C16; at least 3200 C16 and using Dram Calculator to get the speed up and tighten the timings. Remember to check/keep FCLK and Memory at 1:1, which it should do automatically at 3600Mhz and below, though over maybe not.

If it's for gaming then you might want to consider a 5600X/5600G, otherwise 3700X is a solid choice.
Yes, a 5600X is a good CPU though as he did state several times that he was on a budget at ~£230+ that maybe too much. The 3700x typically goes for ~£170 and seems within range of his budgetary concerns.

Though if *only* gaming the 5600g (I can see it for £199 though a very long wait time) might be one I'd try to get but only at that £199 price and if all-round computing then the 3700X.

Didn't realise the 3700X was 'typically' £170, if that's a widely available going rate then by all means get that CPU, makes a welcome change from recent history where AMD have been exceedingly poor in the sub £200 category compared to a year or two ago.

what speed ram should i go for ?

Corsair CMK32GX4M2A2400C16 Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4 2400 MHz XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory Kit, Black

is what i was going for but then saw its 2440mhz, but some other speeds are crazy crazy prices,

Try to get at least 3200. Look for Crucial Ballistix kits. You can get a 3200/CL16 32GB kit of that for under £100 brand new right now. It's good stuff and generally has some very decent potential for overclocking/tightening timings.
