What AMD demonstrated, will be Ryzen's very best performance against Intel.
If the following article can be taken at face value:

Then it would seem that Ryzen with it's 8 cores and 16 threads can out compete the 7700K with its 4 cores and 8 threads in some departments, but be beaten in others.
I suspect that the bottom line is, that the intel CPUs will still have faster single threaded performance and IPC, and will beat AMD core for core, GHz for GHz in the vast majority of tests and benchmarks.
For most PC users, the intel chips will offer the better experience. AMDs selling point will have to be more cores and more future proofing at the same price point as Intel offers less cores, less threads, and less future proofing.
