I7 860 just went from 4 cores to two...

Its true HT is a bit overrated, but still its a feature you paid for. So if it was me i'd RMA, as all that will happen is you'll get a shiny new chip.

agree'd, you paid for a fully working chip. and if the HT has died, there is nothing to say it isnt signs of future issues, so get it swapped out now whilst under warrenty.

Sounds like a Windows problem to me, as you can boot with either 4 cores or 2 cores/4 threads (Windows sees HT as extra cores).

Are you sure the "Number of processors" tab in msconfig is unchecked?

In my bios i can change if i have ht on or off, i can also change how many cores i have active "all, 1, 2, 3, 4" , if i turn ht on i only get the "all, 1, 2" options but if i turn it off i get "all, 1, 2, 3, 4" all my cores, it is sadly nothing as simple as my os :(

unless the cpu has been burnt to hell and is blacker than the black hole of calcutta how the hell would intel know you overclocked it anyhow, its not like the cpu has got a built in audit trail saying 'yes I was abused to hell and back , my last owner pumped elventyten volts through me and jacked my multiplier up to infinity and beyond ?'

EVen if they asked you the standard questions 1. Did you use this above the rated speed ? - Answer, no, not sure I know what you mean there boss ? Followed by question 2 what heatsink were you using ? Answer I used the standard Intel HSF tha came in the box with the CPU.

Unless Intel have a secret service division akin to the Mossad and had planted spy cameras in the box to observe your fitting of said CPU there is no way they can accuse you of anything other than what youanswered above in 1 and 2

It could even be the motherboard not the cpu causing that problem... I would test the CPU in another motherboard 1st.. I'm starting to feel it could be a dying motherboard causing this too.

I'm just stating something that I read on this forum ages ago where someone had mentioned that Intel and AMD can indeed tell whether their chips have been ran beyond stock frequencies....

Wish I could find the thread where I read this as I'm sure it was one of the OcUK techs that said this.

Um...not sure the second point is true. I think it comes from an individual forum post some time ago that was later debunked, and which has been propogated by AMD fanboys (obviously not implying that you are one :p!) ever since.

What *does* void the warranty is if Intel determine that a damaged processor was caused by incorrectly applied thermal paste, or an incorrect heatsink mounting. I assume they look for specific things like thermal paste residue on the contacts, or a damaged IHS.

Also there is NO way at all Intel can know if you've OCed a cpu. Again, there was a forum post a while back where some fool said that Intel CPUs have a permanent memory cache or something.

They have no way to know if you have Overclocked or used the stock cooler but that was there stance when I had 3 week debate with them whether they were going to RMA my I7 CPU in the end they refused.

I let slip that i hadn't used the stock cooler when they asked me the type/serial number (cant remember which now) and i said i didn't even know where it was as i never got it out of the box (doh).

Ive only dealt with Intel direct once so perhaps i was just unlucky.

As for being a fanboy in the last 3 years i have bought 11 Intel CPUs and only 5 AMD.

edit: have just realised that OEM don't come with a stock cooler...the mofo must have been blagging me :( going to search for the Email.

Actually, there are lots of little people that live inside cpus. They're the ones that do all the processing stuff. When you put more volts through them they hurt like hell :(.

:(.

Install Linux! (a live distro of ubuntu) and check your system through that.
