Hi all,

Hoping there is some one out in OCUK land that can help me get my i7-920 to 4GHz

The CPU is a D0 revision and I bought the whole system about 2½ years ago. I have been running it at 3.8GHz its entire life

as I've been wary of temperatures! So now I've grown a pair I've decided I want 4GHz

i7-920 D0
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
Patriot Viper 1600MHz
Corsair H50
Be-Quiet 900w PSU

I was running on F7 BIOS but I have now flashed it to F12

I have been following this guide - the quick and dirty settings wouldn't work

When the multiplier is set to 21 I am getting a stock vid between 1.232 and 1.248 running prime 95. I have used the
following settings in th BIOS

I can up the BLK up to 178 and the system remains 24Hr stable. At 180 it fails.

I thought I had the system stable at 3.9GHz (Blk 186) as it passed 18Hrs of prime 95, but trying the same settings again it has just failed ( 1.29375 vcore)

Not sure what to do as I have tried lots of different QPI and vcore combinations an just can not seem to get the chip to run quicker

Try using the yellow highlighted entry.

I'd agree with all of that except maybe try with XMP disabled first as that can occasionally cause stability issues.

similar to where i was stuck. i was also unable to get to that 4ghz, i did get help off a friend.

Try changing a few settings. Not saying it will work though.

Vcore 1.35
Pll 1.8
dram 1.66
imc 1.20
21 mutli X 191

For me to get that extra little bit, the vcore had to be 1.36, your vcore seems low to me. And the imc had to go up. Any way hope this might help a little, good luck.

By the way with those settings im 42 41 41 43 idle. and full load hitting 70. You can always bring the vcore back down a little after its stable.

vcore might need a dash more, don't bother with XMP.

i managed 4GHz on a ud7 with (only things different from yours):
Vcore 1.26
qpi 1.21
cpu pll 1.7
qpi pll 1.18
uncore x17

mileage will vary obviously between chip and board, but you shouldn't need much more than that imo

also, gigabyte boards like odd multis on the cpu, so 21x191 will work better than 20x200 ;)

Thanks for the advice. Two problems:

I don't have compatible under performance enhance, its either standard turbo or extreme and for the QPI I have a choice of 1.315 or 1.335

OK I used Standard as its supposed to be more stable. at QPI 1.315 volts I got a BSOD within 2 seconds of starting Prime 95 error was 0x0124 and according to that guide I was following it says to increase/decrease QPI voltage - I went to 1.335 and th machine rebooted itself as I was entering my password!

2.0v pll is too high. I've never known a chip need anywhere near that. Intel spec is 1.8 but most will run happily below that.

What BSOD are you getting. Look at the code at the bottom, if it ends in 0124 then QPI is your problem (too high/too low).

Move QPI to 1.315. One worker failed after running Prime 95 for just over 3 mins and two workers failed after 5 mins temperatures are hitting 78ºc

Put QPI up a notch then.

3 main voltages that affect temps are vcore, QPI and CPU pll.

Adjust one at a time so you know if you are getting closer to stability or not using that particular setting.

Memory speed has the biggest bearing on QPI. Fast memory typically requires high QPI for example my OCZ blade which run at stock 2000MHz CAS7 needs 1.5v to run stable. 1600 mhz should not need that much though, perhaps 1.4 tops.
