i7 920...who is still enjoying its awesomeness

Fellow 920 owners, when do you plan on replacing your CPU's?

I'm considering holding out until Ivy-E towards the end of this year/early next year.

I was thinking of replacing my 930 for Haswell, but on second thoughts this chip caters for my needs so I wont bother.

I'm a gamer only. So I'm tempted by Haswell to be honest.

I'd love to go 2011 (ivy-E), but I don't think it is value for money for my personal needs. Haswell should be a suitable upgrade to us i7 920, especially those of us gaming and could benefit from the higher clocks in games such as BF3 and FSX etc.

I'm sure my x58 setup back in March 2009 didnt cost as much as a top line 4 core 2011 setup now.

Depending on feedback for Haswell, I'll go for it. If it is pants then I'll go for ivy-E when released and take the hit on the wallet. I don't want to have this CPU and mobo for 5 years, it is time for an update. I bored of it now, but still mighty impressed with it. I'll keep the chip for sentiment value in a tranparent case as a paper weight probably.

About the same :)

tbh look at ps4 which is going to be most powerful console and your cpu will be as powerful atleast if not a little faster so gaming wise as long as you not bottle necking your gpu you good for few years yet minimum.

most games will be catered for consoles now anyway so could possibly get 3 years yet out of em.

Well there you go.

Maybe I'll just go out and get a 3820 now then!

I would agree with this, but also point out it depends greatly on the quality of the port if the PC version is as undemanding as the console version, i.e Halo was designed for a console with a 733MHz Pentium III and a GeForce 3, yet you were lucky to get decent performance out of the PC port with a 2GHz+ Athlon XP or Pentium 4 and a Radeon 9700.

Mind you, was the P6T near the top of the pile, I don't remember other being a lot more. Some of the mobos now cost 300+

Waiting to see how Haswell turns out. For me it'll come down to how well it overclocks. Might also conisder Ivybridge-E but to be honest I'll only be upgrading mainly for fsx/prepar3d. Just installed fsx on my brother in laws i5 3570K and even though it's still at stock speeds it felt quite a bit smoother than my [email protected], albeit with many fewer addons.

I'm quite into the idea of a small form factor build next, so maybe haswell / GTX 780 in a bitfenix prodigy or something similar. But there's nothing gaming wise that the 920 struggles with. It may be a couple more years before it becomes a necessity, atm its just an option to scratch the growing upgrade itch.

At the time i got it, it was probably an upper middle range board, iirc the p6t ws or something was above it. The topmost asus board at the time was the rampage 2 extreme.

I have some spare cash and was thinking about upgrading some parts of my PC including a new CPU. I'm running a I7 920 @ 3.8ghz at the moment. Do you think it would be worthwhile to upgrading to a 3700K or wouldn't I see much of a performance?
