i7 970 overclocking

Oh Hey Guys

just thought i would let you all know that i have an i7 970 CPU

its overclocked to 4.2ghz with my Dominator GT running at 2000MHz C7-7-7-18 1t

its running sweet on my rampage II with no problems to report.

cant wait to get it on my Gigabyte UD7 :)

its gonna be sleek
 
So strange that this thread has been up for long and no has yet posted.

Probably because there is nothing to complain about, as you have acheived a sweet clock.

the gulftowns clock a little differently to the bloomfields

my old 920 needed around 1.275 for 4.2 [this was a very cherry picked first batch d0], but most of the newer nehalems tend to do 4.2 at around 1.35v

the 970 needs a little more than my 980x did but it sits nicely at 1.325v

cpu pll at 1.9 and qpi/dram at 1.3

not ideal but everything has plenty of water on it. most impressed with the dominator GT though. just sits there and accepts everything i have thrown at it.

shame you cant get it anymore ;)

as i said, its being moved into a UD7 soon enough so i may be able to get a different clock on that hopefully

nice to see some enthusiasts posting and asking the right questions twist3d0n3, shows there are some valuable posters here :)
 
have you had a go with the chip in the ud7 as of yet? curious to see how they overclock on the ud7, just to build a comparison really to what i've got (don't think my chip is anything special in terms of clockability, need 1.3v for 4GHz, which makes me quite jealous to see people with 1.2x stable 4.2 clocks :D)

silly me, i thought the 970 was just the unlocked multi version of the 920 :p

as far as it goes for the 32nm chips, what are the voltage limits before you *may* cause a bit of damage?

i've got some of the standard dominator 1600MHz ram (9Gb to be exact) and it's pretty damn good. i've managed to drop CAS latency 1 notch (7) whilst running them at 1600MHz and with a small reduction in voltage

in honesty no

i have clocked loads of gulftowns in the UD7 and that is really what finalised my choice.

the max you can go to really on non-extreme cooling is around 1.35-1.375 on gulftown
this is the reason my 980x died :(

it was not happy with my 5ghz @ 1.4v run

the ud7 is the most consistant x58 i have come across so far, the rampage is decent but i do get bored very quickly.

sounds like your chip is about average if im being honest, a lot of the very late 920s were needing 1.38+ for 4.2 which is very poor.
 
what bios's have you played with on the ud7? i had f3 for a while, figured as new ones were coming out i'd check out a later one and am currently on the f6, which imo is a bit buggy (after initial post occasionally it'll just have a flashing bar and not do anything, forcing a reset). might consider dropping back to an earlier one, but i don't want to risk something going haywire...

holy cow, 1.38 for 4.2 seems a bit steep. if i have to use anything near that i'd just stick to 4Ghz i think :p
 
Nice clock mate. I briefly had the Dominator GT 2000mhz 8-8-8-24 kit but my d0 needed an insane amount of vtt to even boot 2000mhz on the ram with 4000 uncore, over 1.4v to boot to windows and even then it wasn't win stable - though like you say the gulftowns can clock different in that regard with their uncore/mem ratio.

I ended up running that RAM at 6-6-6-18 @ 1600mhz but apart from a small reduction in latency there was very little difference to my standard 1600mhz dominator at 8-8-8-24, so sold it on

Agree that the earlier chips are the best for d0's, mine at 4.2ghz needs 1.28v load with 1.3v vtt which is a nice clock, 4.4ghz needs just over 1.36v, i tend to switch between the two clocks depending on my mood :D Generally stick wtih 4.2ghz mostly as its about 10c cooler under full load (65c vs 75-78c).

One thing to note with the UD7 bioses is a lot of the newer ones change the LLC functionality and some are a lot more aggresive with it, can't remember what bios I am on..

Also suprised your didn't go for a 980x over the 970, can actually get a 980x cheaper than a new 970 if you look around :)
 
I'm madly trying to sell enough stuff to switch to a 970..

My 920's will do [email protected] :(

But I'd stretch to a 980X if they are cheaper than 970's!! :D

I only want 4.2Ghz no need to whack 1.4V through it for me :p

cant send it back, it was only on loan really so its death wasnt mourned too much.

get the 980x. personally i would take the x over the 70 as intel are definatly speed binning the gulftowns, plus, for the extra cash you get the unlicked multi which gives it a better resale value.

thats all well and good. but you will kill the cpu at those volts.
thats how my 980x fried.

32nm chips dont like that much vcore unless they are being cooled loads
my 5ghz run at 1.425v was enough to render my 980x useless.

dont do it.

1.35v the safe max for 24/7
