i3 540 @ 4.2ghz on air cooling... using some old crap so should see a nice few degrees difference...
Depending how much we get, I'll do it on my GPU too when I get some time.

When placing heatsink on top of the cpu, the heatsink has a tendency to slide because of the TIM. I apply some hand pressure on the heatsink before securing it with the mounting system. However if I let go of my hands the heatsink will still slide and some movement does occur:(. ( I am thinking maybe having two people to install heatsink will be better as one can hold the heatsink in place while the other one tightens it with the mounting system.)

Will this affect the TIM spread? I am guessing probably not as much as lifting off the heatsink then placing it back on the cpu and thus generating air bubbles.

Many thanks.

You need to 'seat' it as in get it in place with screws on their first tightening, at this point some movement shouldnt be a big issue, it will happen with all sinks.

Key thing I agree with is that when you clamp it down the tim should be spread more as you add more pressure. Blob on the centre is the best way of achieving this- in reality its never gonna involve a perfect top bottom seating and perfect 360 degree spread.

So long as you dont wipe it about you should be fine- at the end of the day if you cant do any better...you cant.

And would my postie hurry up...I wants play.

Thanks for the info mate. Yeah I agree that you can only do your best when seating the heatsinks as they come with various mounting designs and I guess each will exert different amount of pressure at maximum limit.:)

good answer - My answers/instructions are sometimes overly involved with why for's & subtle nuances and can muddle the idea on what is a simple process.

Thanks for the clear statement.

Mailing went out over 2 days so receipt will be a little more staggered as we have to fill out a hand written customs form for each so most will/should have by the weekend.
