ICC Cricket World Cup ** spoilers ** [14th February – 29th March 2015]

People really think bringing back Pietersen will solve things? He's too toxic for that dressing room and needs to be playing consistent county cricket instead of hopping between T20 competitions

Had to laugh at this one from the Guardian comments section:

I don't understand it. 260 is an above average score, and we didn't win?

Part of me is pleased we're out. Getting to the knockout stages would have been seen as a "par score" and would have papered over the cracks.

I still haven't forgiven the ECB over Pietersen, to be honest.

How do you know that the problem is him and not the others? Just because Anderson, Broad, and the coaching staff said he's the issue doesn't mean it's true. What do they know? Just look at how terribly they've played without him. At least with him in the team, they were winning matches. This World Cup has been an absolute shambles. The management have been reluctant to get rid of the older players that are just not performing. Keeping Cook as captain for so long didn't help matters, and then you come to the World Cup and you don't play someone like Alex Hales who is a big hitter, that's another nail in the coffin. You look at all the other teams that have done well this World Cup. Each of them have at least 2 - 3 standout big hitters. What does England have? Eoin Morgan who is totally out of form (just like Cook was), and then Jos Buttler who is the only big hitter that has to then try and steady the ship and save the day. Him and Root have been the only consistent performers in this World Cup, but they're weren't enough to save the rest of the team.

And Moore's making yet more references to stats etc, proves that the management are going about this all the wrong way. The stats need to be forgotten, and the team needs needs to catch up with the game where it is now because the other teams, quite frankly, have left England behind. They've been too stuck in their ways. Tactics in the field have been awful, you can see them get to that point where they just don't know what to do anymore because all their pre-determined tactics haven't worked but they still keep at them over and over again because no doubt the coaching staff's stats suggest that it'll work eventually. That's not how you play Cricket.

I agree with this. I wasn't a huge fan of Pietersen and there was a time when I genuinely believed he was the problem, but in retrospect it's obvious he was carrying most of the team. He was always the biggest England wicket for Australian bowlers and I respected his talent.

When Pietersen fired, he fired on all eight cylinders. These days it's hard to find anyone in the England team who doesn't resemble a second hand tuk-tuk.

Pietersen's still not getting much love:

England's one-day side are in "defensive mode" but Kevin Pietersen's return would be "untenable", says former captain Adam Hollioake.

England are struggling to qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals after losing three of their four group games.

Pietersen said he would "work" on a return after incoming England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Colin Graves refused to rule out a recall.

"It would be too distracting to have him back in the side," said Hollioake.
