ICE install advice

Got to be honest, the Pioneer Tape unit I used to have still sounds better than anything Sony have released lately!

Suggest you re think the ICE and start again, as you're only going to have to find a replacement for the Mondy as any standard Ford ICE wont shift the gear in there or have the compatability.

Instead of the AVIC try a slightly older 7500 unit. Motorised 7.5" screen too.

R0551, I take it you're Rossi from TA?

You're the only person to mention an MDF baffle, and only TA people would even think of mentioning such a thing :D

Scooby, I've heard quite bad things about the Nakamichi car audio gear. Overpriced and underperforming are words that come to mind. Shame really :(

MDF baffles are common sense I would have thought!

Are these HU's being mentioned modern looking? If so won't they look a bit out of place?

Yes, he'll be left with a garish space to the left or right of the current unit which unfortunately, no company has produced a decent enough facia adapter to impress me.

Euuw. :(

One thing I did with my car was print off pics of new HU's in colour and go to the car to put the pic against the console to check it blended in nicely.

I can't speak to my bro atm to check what he's got but in his 530 he uses the stock HU with some Sony amp/sub in the boot and it sounds bleedin amazing.

(& doesn't look stupid) :p

I think this is the best way forward. Thats the same amp as Nickxx has?

Pioneer and kenwood also do flatter looking units, but all of these would have to be cabin mounted otherwise the sealed boot would block all the bass.

Personally i would go for some good quality Components + Amp and forget about the sub.

That’s the main problem with beemers when it comes to ICE the boots are sealed so well that it's hared to get the sound through to the cabin.

Best advice would be to phone a few local car audio places and ask them what demo cars they have as I'm sure a lot of them will have BMs, go along and have a listen. That’s what I did and made my decisions on what I actually heard when put in the car.

Yes I am :D and I made some for my 620, deadeding also helps a hell of a lot.

If the boot is completely sealed off then getting bass into the cabin could be quite hard, in that case I'd probably go for a 10" with a ported box made to spec, not that hard to do and there are people who can work out a good size for you if you don't want to lose your boot space. Saying that I've got a 12" in a ported and 2 amps in the boot and still have boot space left over :D

Head units for BMWs...look at the Becker series (Mexico pro, Grand Prix and the like). Aesthetically they're the best match for the BMW dash (not bad for VWs either) and in terms of sound quality and build they're as good as the competition from Alpine and Pioneer IMHO :)

Bloody expensive if you want a decent one though.

I have the Low OBC so its located in the instrument panel only.

Any chance you can take a photo of what you have installed already?

Edit: From what I can see on your posted photos, you have the Business Computer (MID/BC) and the cassette player under the flap. Under this lot you have the climate control.

Unplug the MID/BC and you will loose all your computer functions. Unless you don't want all that range, limit, MPG etc stuff. I think you will still get OBD stuff routed through the instrument display. Not 100% sure on this as I think it routes through the MID/BC then upto the instruments.
Unplug it and try.

thats why they use the ski hatch as they call it thats behind the rear arm rest to port the sound into the cabin or build ports into the rear shelf :)
