Icey boxes for storage?

Im looking to add some portable storage into my system. I've been looking at the icey boxes with maybe a 80gig ide maxtor or seagate.

Has anyone got this setup? What's the performance like? Could i stream movies/mp3's from it?

The only problem I had with mine was that I could constantly hear the disc spinning.
I’ve got hearing like a hungry, slightly agitated dog so I ended up leaving it switched off.

Ended up ripping the drive out and sticking it in my silent fileserver.

A seagate 300Gb sata and/or a 400GB seagate PATA.

Performance PC-wise it cost a lot more cpu time but I never noticed any response-lag that I haven’t experienced with other external systems.

i was planning on using a seagate barracuda ide, as they are nice and quiet.

Reckon it'll be ok to play mp3's etc off them?

Can you format/partition the drive while its in the case?

yes. It's exactly the same method as normal, just use disc management.
