Hi there. I am trying to set up ICS for my 360 to have a net connection. My current set up is a modem/router many many rooms away which my pc has a wireless connection to. My motherboard has an onboard network card so I have plugged a bit of cat5 into it & the other end into the 360. The problems come when I try to connect the two.

In my network connections I have:

1384 net adapter (connected, Firewalled)
Local Area Connection (disabled)
Local Area Connection 2 (this is the one the xbox is plugged into) (Limited or no connectivity, Firewalled)
Wireless adapter (Connected, Firewalled)

With all the settings left alone I have a net conn on my pc, but obviously nothing on the xbox. If I try to set up ICS on the wireless adapter I get the following message:

An error occured while ICS was being enabled.
ICS Cannot be enabled.
A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing.

& bumps me back to the folder.

If I set the LAC2 connection to use a set ip address (chose 192.168.0.50) then its status goes to connected, firewalled but I lose internet connectivity  and I still am unable to get ICS to function.

My router uses 192.168.0.1 so I changed that as well but still no joy.

I very briefly had ICS up for about 10 mins or so & the xbox got assigned its own network ip but then the net connection went as it failed on the DNS & having undone everything I cannot get it back. Any ideas? They would be gratefully recieved :D pulling my hair out here.

Have you tried simply bridging the wireless connection and the LAC2 connection.

If you really want to use ICS, then you will have to change your existing network to use a different subnet, as ICS will try to use 192.168.0.0 for its INTERNAL network. This would involve changing the IP address of your router, and the DHCP range the router distributes, along with any static IP addresses you have set on your network.

Just having looked through the guide that Suarve mentions, they recommend bridging the connection in your case as well.

Don't use ICS because you already have all the kit you need to handle DHCP and NATing on your network, just bridge the wireless connection and the wired one as above.

Will take a look at bridging later & get back to you. Not made a bridged connection before so will need to have a read up on exactly what needs to be done.

Cheers.

Ok I have tried bridging the connections but still no joy.

Results as follows:

Bridging wireless network connection & LAC2 = I lose internet access & the xbox fails to obtain an ip.

Bridging 1394 connection & LAC2 = Internet access kept but still the xbox cannot get an ip.

Bridging all 3 = loss of internet access & still no ip.

Any ideas? Didn't think it would be this difficult when I started out :p

Which two should I be trying to bridge (I thought it would be the one I did first)?

Remove all attempts at ICS or bridging used upto this point.

Disable 1394 connection in Network Connections.

Look at Local Area Connection (disabled) properties to find out which network card it is.

Look at Local Area Connection 2 (Limited or no connectivity, Firewalled) properties to find out which network card it is.

Confirm that the Xbox is physically plugged into Local Area Connection 2 as it seems you have 2 network cards in the system (either onboard or PCI).

Log into the router and confirm that it is set to 192.168.0.1 and that it has DHCP turned on so that the wireless card will get its network configuration from the router once it connects.

From a command prompt (Run>cmd>ipconfig /all) note all of the Ip addresses for each interface. Maybe copy and paste all the info into a new post here.

All Bridging & ICS gone.

1394 disabled.

Local Area Connection (disabled) = Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller

Local Area Connection 2 (Limited or no connectivity, Firewalled 888 now is Connected & firewalled) = Marvell Yukon 88E8052 PCI-E ASF

Positive it is plugged into number 2. When the cable is removed that is reported on screen. I have no idea where number 1 is as I can see no port on the mobo.

From Router Status screen:

MAC Address <hidden>
IP Address 192.168.0.1
DHCP On
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Info from cmd:

Cheers for the advice so far, networking has never been my strongest point but this seems silly :D

(am out all of tomorrow so will action any suggestions assuming you come back :D on Tuesday evening)

All looks ok.

Bridge the Wireless connection and the Local Area connection.

Then do another Run>cmd>ipconfig /all

As soon as I bridge the wireless adapter I lose my net conn

The first problem you've got is the router is using the IP address ICS assigns statically to the chosen NIC.

Cancel any bridging etc you've setup. put all the network adapters back to "assign ip address automagically", same with DNS server etc....

change the IP address of the router to 192.168.1.1, make sure its set to assign ip adresses using DHCP (the scope to use should be 192.168.1.2 -> 192.168.1.254, you probs wont need this info)

Forget the xbox for a moment, connect to your wireless network, (this adapter should be assigned an ip address in the 192.168.1.X range)

once thats connected, working, internet is ok etc... right click the wireless connection and choose "share this connection, let others connect through this blah blah" tick box....

one of your LAN connections will now have been assigned an ip address of 192.168.0.1

you need to plug your xbox into this network port. This will act as a "mini" DHCP server and assign your xbox an ip address in the range of 192.168.0.X

that should be it :D

post back with results, problems...

If I didn't suspect you were a dude I would kiss you. That has got me far far further than ever before. :D It has connected & my pc net conn has remained intact as well. I went for ICS rather than bridging, is that the way to go or is bridging for some reason better?

However, the next problem appears to be connecting to Xbox Live (which is sadly kinda the point :p)

On the xbox the network test shows the IP address, CNS, MTU & ICMP all as confirmed but the Xbox live fails & the more info box is empty.

Any ideas? Might a firewall be blocking that maybe, if so I have virtually no idea how to configure the firewall on my router or the windows one so would definitely once more need you help.

I am still unsure why you wanted ICS. You could have saved yourself hassel just buy buying a switch and an extra 1mtr Cat5e cable.

ICS has a few basics to it.
[ Plug cross over cable from xbox 360 to lan card 2 ]
[ Configure ip on host on both lan cards 1/2 ]
[ Enable ICS on lan card 1 ]
[ Turn off firewalls (you don't need them on to be fair) ]
[ Test connections ]

Settings For Lans You could have used:
LAN 1 [Wireless adapter]
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : [Router IP Address]
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : [Router IP Address]

LAN 2 [Local Area Connection 2]
(Enable Internet connection Sharing > Right click Properties > Enabled Internet Sharing)
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

LAN 1 - [XBOX 360]
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.4
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.3
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Do tests like ping [ip address] / Disable&Enable Lan adaptors if you run into trouble.

Bare in mind, to use the xbox 360 your going to need to have the pc on. all for the sake of a second hand switch.

But would my switch not have had to have been connected to my router which already has a switch?

As for the firewall(s) I use them as I use a wireless connection so am trying to add a little bit of extra security to that connection so I would have thought them kinda handy?

My pc is normally on so ICS if I can get it working wont be an issue. I also wanted to test out the connection I would get on the xbox without spending anything as if it is like my pc for gaming as I suspect it will be it will make proper gaming unviable for the time being.

Alright I understand nobody likes spending money. If you have a wireless connection and it has security set it is very unlikely your going to need a firewall to block incoming traffic, however it could be good for outgoing traffic (spyware, adaware, trojens e.t.c).

The switch would have to be connected to the router but atleast that gives you flexability as the switch would sit next to your pc and the xbox/pc would connect to the switch and the switch would connect to the router.

router > Switch > PC | Xbox 360

If your careful this is unlikely going to happen. I would do the following personally.

01. Disable all firewalls (except router).
02. Make sure encryption is turned on your WiFi.
03. Password protect your system with logon passwords.
04. Make sure all systems has antivirus software installed.
05. Stick to genuine websites you know.

If you follow above you will be alright and you can turn the firewall off, which is probably causing problems for your xbox 360 connection.

Follow the setup above with network settings and you should be fine.

hi there. I am a dood haha ;) Anway,

ICS should have disabled the firewall on the LAN connection anyway. You shouldn't "really" need windows firewall if your using a hardware based one in your router. for now just goto windows firewall in ctrl panel, third tab called advanced an untick the box at the top for wireless connection.

as for the router firewall, you could always turn it off for 5 mins whilst you try it. if it doesnt make any difference your barking up the wrong tree. i assume you know how to enter the config as you changed its ip address. :) post back with the results of the firewall test.

My router has a switch. My router is miles away. I cannot plug my pc into it so likewise cannot plug the xbox in either. If I could believe me I wouldn't be going through all this hassle :D

Of your steps 1-5 I have 2-4 covered. But I occasionally find myself being linked to random sites...

I have turned off the windows firewall (was just there as an extra to the hardware one which I think is better???) and still get the Xbox live failure so I guess it wont be that.

The router firewall is set to allow always outbound & block always inbound so I have tried configuring it following this guide: http://www.philgilbert.co.uk/2007/12/03/xbox-live-setup-for-netgear-dg834g/ but when I try entering the xp ip of 192.168.0.x I am told it is an invalid ip now. Leaving it as the ip for my pc which is now on the .1 domain still gives me a failure connecting.

I would turn it off briefly if I could see how but so far i can only see the way to set rules not turn it on & off.

edit - Added a rule to allow all incoming stuff (which having checked seems to be the only way) - same problem. New ideas please :D

we've changed the ip of the router to 192.168.1.1 so to access the web based config goto start, run and type http://192.168.1.1 enter username/password...

EDIT:

erm, you need to add 3 rules, call em xbox360-1, xbox360-2 etc etc

you need to add the following ports in:

UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074

so #1 =

Service Def:

Name XBOX360-1
Protocol UDP
Start 88
End 88

the goto the Always ALLOW section... and lan server i think its called needs to be ip on your wireless connection (this will most likely be 192.168.1.2) run ipconfig /all in a command window as you've done above to check, it will definately be in the 192.168.1.X range though.

Leave the wan users bit and click save, rinse and repeat for the other 2 ports and post back. good luck
