I have been looking online recently to see what sort of careers will be available if i want to get into a networking/telecoms line of work. im still studying for my degree so its still a long way off but ive still been looking into it. After reading another thread about apprentiships i started looking around for things like that and graduate schemes, and it seems like no matter what company, even graduate schemes that only do very basic things like helpdesk work and such still require GCSE's and sometimes A levels, problem is, although im currently doing a degree with the OU, i have no gcses or A levels, so that counts me out of most graduate schemes.

One job i thought i could always apply for would be the army, as the corp of signals has lots of ICT jobs, but now ive found out that even getting a job like that will be unlikely without gcses, even tough my degree should be more important.

anyway my point is, i have few questions. Has anyone here managed to get a job and become successfull in ICT with a degree but no gcses or A levels? my other question is, is it realistic for me to be able to get a job in any IT field without gcses or a levels but WITH a degree?

If i cant get a job at all due to lack of gcses or a levels, is there any way to do GCSE exams and not have to do years of coursework, because when i finish my degree i dont realy want to do many more years of studying subjects that are easier (but time consuming to get the qualification).

any help would be grately appreciated, because im stuck as to what i should do once i finish my degree. i hoped that at least i could join the army, as 4 or more years doing ICT with the corp of signals should look good on a CV and that experience should make up for any lack of gcses/a levels, but even that looks daubtfull now.

thankyou, its nice to know that its at least possible for me to get a job in networking then.

im 18 have no qualifications like the above poster and I work in ICT for a massive Insurance Underwriters for £24k a year.

If i can do it so can you :)

I got my job (network controller) with no GCSEs or A levels.
So it's certainly possible.
In computing GCSEs and A levels are worth squat anyhow.

And here i am studying programming and such at college

no don't lie because if found out you'll be sacked.

join any kind of first line support job that a monkey can do, show you're half way decent and work hard and you'll move up quickly.

also don't bother with a degree, do something like ITIL instead. much more useful.

I have been in my new job for almost a month now :) IT Engineer for the Highland area for a rather large company.

I lucked out really. Part of their business is recruitment, and I was actually in for interview for a job with another company (also IT related)

My CV was very well presented, and although I dont have many qualifications (8 GCSE's, 3 highers, CCNA) I talked during my interview about personal development, doing my Microsoft certs etc which seemed to really impress the guy who was interviewing.
On my way home I got a call from the company director asking me to come and speak to him. They pretty much created a position for me because they were impressed with me and my ambition rather than my qualifications.

Needless to say I'm delighted. Company vehicle, laptop, mobile and plenty of training that is all being paid for. If it can happen to me, it can happen to you.

i'm 6 months into my job and i graduated 6 months ago also :\ No rest for the wicked. After being an ict technician in a school i was hoping to go back there so i was upset when i found they didnt have a budget for me.

anyway now i'm in a company where i'm hardware & software engineer and started on 20k. It involved a 3month review and now im on 25k! with another review this april!

More to the point i had not very good gcse's but my c.v was good and i had previous computer experience. i'm 23 in feb. pretty happy right now aim to be on 30 by the end of the year that for me would be immense!

good luck!

The convo is saved on my pc at home. I'll post it when I get home for you :)

Yes please do! I'm 23, in ICT with a degree (please people no degree bashing) and earning just over 20k, and just found out if I stay put that's what I'm likely to be earning for the foreseeable future!

Ok I'll post it no problem.

Will take me a few mins to edit out the swearies though :p

And make it readable so I'll have to change it from msn speak to normal :)

Ya see this is why i might not even go to uni - you can be an absolute ground breaker on computers but they never recognise it.

Then again i went to uni: "now i'm in a company where i'm hardware & software engineer and started on 20k. It involved a 3month review and now im on 25k! with another review this april!"

so it works both ways. depends how you put yourself out there. If you're confident, experienced to a certain extent, social and assert yourself to finding a job then you should be okay.

I cnat stand people who feel because they get rejected from one job they're not going to get a job! Takes a lot of effort, but it'll come in the end!

There is no secret, I know people with good degrees struggling on £13k a year whereas others have average degrees (myself included) on a lot more than that.

Qualifications gets you noticed on paper and meet the criteria for the job. Personality takes over in the interview and this is the most important thing. Having the best degree ever yet having the personality of a lettuce won't get you anywhere at all.

How do you guys find these jobs?

I'm currently getting bent over at this company.

Since day one I've implemented a voice driven menu system for the telephone, built, upgraded and fixed many computers, rescued the webserver after a hard disk failure... basically, I'm the only person in this entire company who is capable of the upkeep of the entire computer network.

I've even travelled to Leeds a few times to other offices, and they once called me up on a Saturday expecting me to go and fix a computer at another site.

And, they're paying me 12 grand for the pleasure! They think they can get away with it by employing me as a "HR Manager". I mean WTF, I don't want to do HR and they know it.

Searches on the Jobcentre site come up with nothing, I thought about an apprenticeship but nothing really interests me... I've been offered a bit of work with a good friend (and ex-employee of this company, after they shafted him too) but tbh, I can't wait.

I want out now.
