Recently bought it an Icy Box with eSata and a 750GB harddrive to go in it. Now when it's connected to my PC via eSata and I turn it on it doesn't automatically become useable, should it? Can I fix this?

Edit: Mobo is MSI Neo2-FR P35

First time round, if the PC is on when you turn the drive on it might not get recognised.

I had to shut down, turn it on then boot back up to get the drive recognised. From there you should be able to turn if on and off without rebooting.

Are you using AHCI?

I'm going to say no as I have no idea where to look for it. Is this a BIOS option?

I don't have to restart my computer, but I do have to go device manager, scan for hardware changes, then it finds it.

Edit: Just went into BIOS and found AHCI under RAID, stupid question, but - Does that mean that I need to run my harddrives in a RAID array?

I did try and Vista just restarted on the boot screen, I take it I need to install drivers when I first install Vista and have it set to AHCI when I install vista?

There is a workaround for Vista to let you do this but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head.

The other option is to use Hotswap! which is a wee system tray app which gives you a shortcut to the "scan for hardware changes" and a safe removal option.

That would be it then. You're using IDE mode which doesn't support hotswapping unless the drivers add it in, you could use hotswap or you could switch to AHCI. It's possible to do the latter without a reinstall, a quick Google will gives loads of results for that. AHCI isn't RAID, aparently RAID mode on Intel boards supports hotswapping as well though.

I basically set up the same thing with a shortcut to Device Manager with rescan in the target line.

Hi.
Had a similar situation with my esata drive. Was set for IDE mode in the bios at first. The drive was recognised by vista if it was turned on prior to booting up the machine. No hot swap.
Turned on the AHCI option in the bios and the drive disappeared entirely. Needed to install the Jmicron sata driver under vista for the drive to be recognised. Now shows up as a SCSI device under the 'safely remove hardware' thingmy in the system tray and will appear in vista if I switch it on after bootup.
Hope that's of some help.

The problem I have is that when I change the option to AHCI it doesn't load Vista at all, it shows the boot screen for a couple of seconds then restarts.
