^ An interesting read indeed

I can't put my finger on why, but there is something wrong with that picture. Maybe it's just the subject used, but it doesn't look right to me.

I think PC Gamer had it right when they reviewed Crysis this month, that FPS games will from now on be looked at from 2 points of view, pre-Crysis and post-Crysis.

Even Megatexture in the screenshots in the link do not look as good as Crysis IMO!

Damn you Crysis! you've ruined every other FPS game!

Typical PC-Gamer crap if you ask me. It's not like it's the first time they've posted drivel - they manage to do it every month and charge people £5 for the priviledge of reading it!

Crysis isn't really *that* special - it's been overhyped and coded in a way so that it runs poorly on new graphics cards, probably so you'll think the graphics are too advanced for today's cards.

As much as I agree with you about PCgamer in general, I do think crisis sets a new standard for FPS. I enjoyed the demo (both graphically and game play) more than any other FPS for years.

The SP demo, yes...not the full game.

Anyway even though the demo runs poor on high settings people are having more fun in the demo than any other demo released recently especially after the unlocked content in demofunmap #5- this is a fact.

I think the word megatexture is a bit misleading... When I read the title it sounded like super-high-res textures (or something), but reading the article it actually seems to be about preventing textures from looking like they've been tiled . And they don't in the screenshot.

The entire map floor is built using one giant, high-res texture. This means they can be totally seamless with no tile effect. Each megatexture in ETQW is up to 32,768 × 32,768 pixels. Id Tech 5, the next id game engine, uses textures measuring 128,000 x 128,000 pixels.

It's more to do with having an environment on one big "mega" texture than anything else, sure it may look like it's been tiled but it uses less memory and performs better than tile based terrain - well from what I translated from the Carmack interviews anyway.

That's fair enough, but I don't see anything Crysis does that other shooters haven't done already.

I think Crysis is very special... it is defiantly the new benchmark for games, its taken that mantel from Half Life 2.. The Source engine is still absolutely amazing, the new Crytek engine is phenomenal..

I think Crysis is probably going to be the best FPS this year (and I've played them all, including 360 ones), but people are giving the engine far too much credit. It looks beautiful but it's far from a paradigm shift that people have been touting it.

And Half Life 2 isn't even there to take the mantle from ! That's for the first Half Life to contend with, and I seriously doubt Crysis will reach a following that touches it.

Ahahahahahaha!

I really hope that's a joke - HL2 was good graphics two years ago (and even then at the time id's Doom engine was better). Can you really say it's better than Bioshock for example?

HL2 is a standard for lots of reasons, no other platform is constantly updated like it is for example.
Bioshock will be forgotten in time but hl2 is constantly modified and added to by the original devs as well as 3rd parties.

The only way crysis could compare would be if that editor is great and some amazing mod is going to come out and turn it into the next bf1942 or cs.

Its unlikely but Im not a modder so Im not sure

Its really not that funny is it?

What I "can really say" is that the Source engine is still absolutely awesome, and Bioshock is hardly 2 months old nevermind 2 years...

The Doom engine is superb, as long as the game is played inside.. HL2 Source engine absolutely owned the Doom 3 engine ..IMO ofcoarse

What's so funny  Games are not all about graphics (although they mighy be to you...) and Bioshock was absolute garbage compared to HL2....and most other FPS games for that matter.
