Games are not all about graphics

So why is everyone acting like Crysis is the best game ever? It certainly doesn't raise any bars in the gameplay department (or the graphics department IMO).

For the type of shooter that it is though what do you want/expect it to do? What is this mytical gameplaying nirvana that people want games to achieve in the FPS genre, im confused. It plays well and feels 'nice' to play, or are we talking an experience of gameplay that is more geared towards a different type of FPS? As i cant imagine what people would be truly happy with when it comes to a shooter like this bearing in mkind we only have the demo to base this on.

Which particular gameplaying bars need to be raised and what can they be raised to?

It does raise bars in gameplay- this is easily going to be the best FPS this year, hands down. The open ended way that you can approach any objective is awesome, it allows for basically limitless playability. Not to mention the nanosuit- I actually completed the demo level without killing anyone. Oh and also, the graphics are part of the entire experience, it generates more immersive gameplay and adds to the whole package. If the rest of the game is anywhere near as cinematic as the demo was- which it will be, i'll be more than happy.

When i played crysis demo i wasnt at all wowed, i just got a "yep this is pretty much what i expected" feeling. It's something that i'll definately pre-order but its never going to recreate the kind of excitement and suspence that i felt when i began the original half life. So there's no way that i will consider this a pc gaming revolution. graphics looks poor on medium and the story is very generic even for an fps game.the game is just too surreal to draw me it.. frozen ships in the middle of the jungle, giant robotic aliens, koreans who dont so much as flinch when they take a bullet and then glow red when they die... it just doesnt create any believability.

Well that's the trouble with what i'm saying - it's just an opinion. I don't have any idea how the gaming industry can improve on what has been and gone.

But I do know that Crysis isn't really much of an improvement at all - I mean it's not like it has any really "new" ideas at all. The setting is stolen from Farcry and SoF2, the ideas taken from the likes of HL2. And as i've said, it's certainly no better graphically.

I'm not "having a go" at anyone. If you think Crysis is the "best game ever" then fair enough. I'm just wondering if there's something i'm missing as I don't see much special or innovative here.

What did you expect in the word "mega"?
It looking good or the way they apply the textures?

Read again.

"John Carmack created MegaTexture to solve a very simple problem: how to get good looking terrain without burning through the texture memory budget."

Objective two complete, needs to work a lot on point number one... No need for the attitude.

Crysis just feels like an big graphics mod for Far Cry. They "feel" like exactly the same game, Crysis just looks better.

Not complaining though. Quite looking forward to playing Crysis. It is massively over-hyped though.
