ide issues

i have just installed an IDE 40gb as a slave and booted up..
the bios shows it as master slave
when xp is launched it doesnt show up in the my computer window
but it shows up as a mass storage device ( without any lettering, ie. ipod ) in Safely Remove Hardware
i've tried putting a IDE to SATA connection still nothing
and IDE to USB .. still nothing
help please.....

What does Disk Management say about the drive - right click on My Computer and pick Manage.
