IDE SSD?

Don't all puke at once!

As you can guess, this is for an ancient laptop. However whilst the laptop is old, it works! Limiting factor speed wise is the 4200RPM HDD in it.

So, what 2.5" IDE SSDs are there?

Obviously I don't want to spend much, it's an old laptop, but if for the sake of £50 I can boost its performance then it'll be worth it

EDIT: Just found http://www.ocia.net/reviews/kingspecssd/page1.shtml, seems I'm not the only one thinking an SSD would be a good boost for an old laptop!

You can get them a google will be your friend, however i doubt you will get one for your budget maybe a sub30gb one or even less but they are about.

The standard HDD is only 40GB, so I'm not after anything massive. Though I reckon 32GB is a bit on the small side.

Do OCZ/Intel or any of the mainstream makes do IDE SSDs? All I seem to be finding is KingSpec or Transcend.... neither of whom I've heard of!

Most of these that you will find are older enterprise/server SSDs using SLC (aka - EXPENSIVE) NAND flash. They were intended to go into servers that had IDE controllers. As such, you won't find one in your budget range. It may be cheaper to replace the entire laptop or just buy a 7200rpm drive for your current unit.

SLC

Even my MacBooks and Gaming PCs only have MLC SSDs in them!

Hmm, the reason I was looking for SSD is because I was struggling to find anyone still making 7,200RPM 2.5" IDE drives! I know Seagate did the Momentus 7200.1 and Hitachi did their Travelstar 7K100.... but I can't find anyone still selling them!

I looked around a while back for the same reason. It was cost prohibitive to upgrade my older lappy to any SSD that I could find in IDE or any 7200rpm IDE HDDs. .
