Hi all
Just ordered a Abit IP35 Mobo, and didnt see the board has only one IDE port.

Ive got 2 Maxtors 300 and 400, DVD ROM and Dual DVD Writer.

Dont mind the loss of one DVD, but have soo much on the Maxtor's.

I have ordered a 500Mb Sata to go with the board.

****** to a IDE to Sata adapter.....

Was thinking of putting the DVD writer on there???

Then the two Maxtors on the single IDE connector of the Mobo???

Any better idea's??

Eventually when money permits I shall get another Sata 500Mb and loose the smaller Maxtor???

Cheers all

I'd suggest just buying a cheap PCI IDE controller card, likely to be more reliable than a SATA to IDE adapter and a bit more versatile. You should be able to pick up a basic one for £15 or less although I can't see any on OcUK at the moment. :)

Cant you use an ata133 cable with two connections and run it into the ide connector?
4 devices into 2 connectors doesn't work....

As suggested go with a PCI card with an HDD and a DVD on that and the same on the onboard connector. That will give you the best spread of bandwidth and still leave you with a DVD to install from on the board in case the machine is picky about booting from the card.

^ Yep, that is the best way to do it :)

I've used a couple of Highpoint SATA to IDE adaptors with two IDE discs in raid 0 for a couple of years and had no problems. They plug into the back of the discs and make the drives a bit longer, had to pick slots in the case carefully as they interfered with the gfx card.

I understand that some of these devices don't work with DVD and CD drives though, I've never tried it with mine.

If you have a spare PCI slot the controller card is the best oprion though. I've seen some 'combo' cards that give you SATA, IDE and more. I would install install Windows with just one DVD drive and the boot drive connected first, then add the extra stuff later.

Get a SATA optical? :)

Ive got the same problem. Currently I have a 120Gb IDE unconnected since its too far away from the IDE DVD-writer to share a cable. Im going to get an SATA DVD-writer. I have found the Samsung sh203b for £15~ online.

Lose 1 CD drive (u only really need 1) and replace the other with SATA and keep the HDs... or just replace the HDs they are getting cheaper all the time for more space.

It shouldn't make the slightest difference which SATA port you connect it to, they are all run off the same controller as far as I am aware so pick the one that allows the best airflow or looks the neatest when connected. :)
