Ideal frames per second for ANY game?

I prefer ~60fps with vsync on, but if it's not an FPS then I can compromise.

If it's Crysis I can also compromise as the motion blur helps.

P.S. I too love it when people barge in with their "facts", Google is their friend. :D

The reason Crysis and perhaps a few other modern games remain quite playable at 20-30 fps is the use of motion blur. It makes you much less receptive to the relatively low frame rate. Crysis is just about playable in very high graphics on my machine, even though I'm probably only getting around 15fps. It's not very comfortable to play like that so I have it on high where I get 25-30 by my guess.

Odd, I turn motion blur off in Crysis, and it still seems remarkably smooth at lower framrates.

Anyways, for me, anything above 30 is fine, I'[m not fussed, and I am also not a big FSP player, so that might explain why.

25 is definatly noticable, It feels very jumpy in MTA :SA with framelock than SAMP without framelock.

For mp and fast racing games it feels smooth for me @ 45, in RTS games I can manage with 20-25 fps... But 25 or is it 30 fps in SA is definatly jumpy, very noticable when driving fast. Look sideways and you can see walls just moving jumpy.

I'm fine with sp shooters @ low fps, played thru gears of war halfway @ 25 fps and also played crysis @ 30 fps, feels smooth.
Mp shooters: I dunno, all the shooters I play online perform superbly, 60-70 fps according to xfire.

There is a thread about this about once per week, and someone always says this and then the same link comes up about how you're wrong :p

Did you post that for the lulz or what?

as you said there is a thread per week saying the same thing, I'll remember not to be the sarcastic guy again next time.

Honestly depends on the game, some games look fine at 25 fps some don't

Depends on the game, if it's a racing game I like 60 FPS, most others like crysis, stalker, supcom, I'm happy with 15 min. 15 doesn't make me less better at the game

Hi guys,

Frames per second are something that matters to me when playing a game. I can't handle a game playing at less than constant 60fps. I wouldn't even dream of playing an online game below 60fps.

How do you feel, I hear some of you are playing Crysis on 35fps. For me I wouldn't even bother; Am I crazy or are other people in the same boat? I can't stand the thought of missing a beat...

Stop being fussy. Turn the FPS counter off and just play the freaking game without worrying (even subconsciously) what frame rate it is!

Maybe I'm using to low frame rates because until recently I had a crap computer but I've never really been bothered by it. They've never been sub 20 though and I know higher is better but I'm not that bothered about 50+ tbh. Don't most good console games run at about 30-35?

this will help explain why faster FPS is needed games and also why 25fps is fine for TV but not for games, I've quoted my post a couple of times now but only in the hope that it helps people understand this whole "25 fps is enough for everything" rubbish,

I've explained this before, and the reason you need more FPS on games compared to TV/FILMS etc is simple, 'Motion Blur',

"the most important factor in the theater is the artifact known as "motion blur". Motion blur is the main reason why movies can be shown at 24 fps, therefore saving Hollywood money by not having to make the film any longer than possible (30 fps for a full feature film would be approximately 20% longer than a film shown at 24 fps, that turns out to be a lot of money). What motion blur does is give the impression of more intervening frames between the two actual frames. If you stop a movie during a high action scene with lots of movement, the scene that you will see will have a lot of blur, and any person or thing will be almost unrecognizable with highly blurry detail. When it is played at full 24 fps, things again look good and sharp. The human eye is used to motion blur (later on that phenomena) so the movie looks fine and sharp."

Basically in game you do not have natural occurring motion blur, you see each and every frame clearly so there for notice the slow down in the transition of frames allot more, mainly in fast action first person games that require you to pan the camera (your point of view) around quickly, company's have recently learned that integrating motion blur into games to emulate what you see on TV or the Movies can help give you the impression that you are getting a constant frame rate, like in the PC game Crysis for example, many people found that even at around 25 frames per second the game unlike many others at this frame rate was quite playable, this was due to the implementation of the motion blur, I think once game engines become better and they can be programmed to emulate motion blur more intelligently then the need for such high frame rates in games will not be as important, the problem with PC games atm the moment is the way in which they show you your environment is too perfect, even in real life with using your very own eyes when you pan across to view something quickly you have motion blur.

all games are different tbh, racing games can be played at a much lower fps than shooters imo,

fps doesn't mean much to me but it is all about how the game feels, some games just feel sluggish under 60fps,

and you may be right about the visual side of things but try playing at 100fps then going back to 25, there will be a huge difference

No, wrong. It's hugely important in racing games! :)

Generally 60+ is where it's at. But it really depends on the game. I'll settle for 30 depending on how it looks if I have to drop the settings to low to get 60. Like some people have said Crysis is playable at 25 and feels pretty smooth, certainly smoother than other games at the same frame rate. Probably due to the motion blur, but whatever, if it makes the game feel smoother I'm all for it.

And to the dude above about only seeing 25 fps. As other have said, totally wrong. After about 60 though it starts to get hard to see any difference.

Stop being fussy. Turn the FPS counter off and just play the freaking game without worrying (even subconsciously) what frame rate it is!

You have a point there. You do get more obsessed when there is a counter going. Where as if its off you tend to forget about the frame rate being a little on the low side.
