Well my VM is being cancelled in about 3 weeks, having too much problems with them, and when they tried to talk me through it over the phone i couldnt understand so i hung up called back later and called them to cancel.

Now it seems that ADSL wont be much good, i was gonna go BE, but since theres a possiblility im 3km away (2.3 straight line) from the exchange, i wont get any more than my current 4mb will i?

Are there any 'set speed' isps that are actually any good other than VM, because i no orange/BT sort of stuff is useless, im going to be doing a lot of online games including on wireless pc's so i need something decent.

Well cable and ADSL are your only real choices for consumer broadband. So if you've discounted cable because of poor service in your area, and you've discounted LLU services like be* because of your distance from the exchange, then you're left only with standard ADSL MAX services.

Generally Entanet resellers like UKFSN and ADSL24 are the most recommended around here, both for service and customer support.

could get satellite, but it'll cost an arm & a leg, last i read installiation was £250, & it cost £50 a month for 2Mb downstream, upstream will be done a dial-ip modem

Arnt ADSL24 and UKFSN the same as BE though? Like you have to be near the exchange.

What speed would i get at 3km (and thats not a straight line)?

Were you not having trouble with your router, as I remember in one of your previous threads that the speeds decrease only happeneded when you were using a router.

Also using wireless can downgrade your connection to your pc depending how far away you are from your router and also the quality of the networking equipment.

Try pinging a couple of websites, I use www.google.co.uk, and www.bbc.co.uk. Do it during the times your service is bad and during peak times. Check weather your getting any loss. Have you also checked if its your pc. Scan for spyware using spybot search and destroy. Try connecting through the modem with a ethernet cable. Plus use gamefiles.virginmedia.com to test speeds and also newsgroups.

When you ping a website these are the results you should be looking at :).

Ping statistics for 64.233.183.99:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 23ms, Maximum = 26ms, Average = 24ms

What I have explained is a all round of what Virgin Media will tell you to do. But knowing these things will let you know if it is your PC or a problem on Virgins side.

I live 2km's from my exchange and can only get 4 meg so i would imagine 3 ish tbh.

Although it totally depends on the length of the wire and the quality. Ie your could go a little out of the way while his goes via London* (a little ott but you get the idea)

The only real way of even getting a close guess would ask the neighbours but then it might be different with your individual line.

oh god im screwed, ill have to go with something crap like sky, or do you need to be near with that.

(I might be wrong but) - Sky, BE etc use ADSL2+ which only really adds speed if your close to the exchange.

IE:
Me - I get on Max 1meg, ADSL2+ would net nearly nowt and so i cant get it
Mate - Used to get 7.5meg and now on ADSL2+ gets 18meg iirc

Have you tried what I said mate, your connation wont automatically fix it's self lol. Plus your power levels on your modem might not be high enough to handle your line. It's all about testing which I would do before you move to another ISP.

nah i have tried everything, given up now, looks like i cant get any good internet now

You will get better speeds with ADSL2+ (ie Be*) with longer distances too. On Max, i was able to sync at about 5.5mb max, but on Be* im on 13meg and i'm 1.5km from the exchange. Granted im am still quite close, but i would say that you would get at least a solid 4-5mb connection, with 1.3meg upload too.

Go with Be* for the upload and great customer care if nothing else. :)

well turns out that im actually 5km from the exchange! so basicly im gonna have to get something awful like BT.

Well, my parents are with Zen on BT Max and they're also 5.5km from the exchange - they sync at around 3mbit speeds. A guy I work with also lives 5.5km from the exchange (very close to my parents' house) and he is on Be getting 4mbit. Dodgy extension wiring has been eliminated from both so in short what I'm saying is that you might still get a little boost. Even if you don't, you'll still be on Be's network avoiding everything BT related (ie. BRAS profiles).

I'd definitely go with LLU if it is available to you. They typically have faster upload and less caps.
At the end of the day, if you are going to get 'crap' speed on ADSL2+, you won't be getting better on ADSL max.

I'd have gone with Be* if it had been available when I cancelled my cable connection.

well turns out that im actually 5km from the exchange! gonna have to stick with VM for a bit then :(

I'm with ADSL24 on there Office 45 package

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4488 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 56 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 7 db 8 db

I would say I'm about the same distance from the exchange as you
