If AMD don't compete with Intel's Sandy Bridge chips with their Bulldozer would you say they are finished?

Taking into account that Intel have their next chips in Ivy Bridge ready to go for next year.

It doesn't look too good for AMD.

Thoughts guys?

as long as amd setups are cheaper than intel there will always be a market for them

seems like we've been waiting for ages to find out what bulldozer performance will be like

They will continue as normal, Llano has been very successful and the percentage of market share that Bulldozer would account for, especially as most people wouldn't have the faintest clue if Sandy-bridge or Bulldozer is better. Their server chips are still good too so I wouldn't have thought they would be in any trouble whatsoever.

You better hope AMD aren't finished, back to the old days of $1000 mainstream CPUs

Is that likely, tho? Even if AMD did shut up shop and close tomorrow?

Do you think Intel could get away with charging that price, or would it simply push people to alternative solutions like ARM chips?

yeah i agree ultimatly amd are very important to the market, and things will chop and change with any luck, long term dominance isnt good for anyone. We used to use xeons exclusivly at work, and recently its been opterons cropping up, the people who are buying our servers could care less about what the cpu is they just want good value so get whats good at the time and amd have a good foothold in the server market currently. I dont think amd will let bulldozer out until its at least competitive on one front, either price or performance, its a situation that is ultimatly a win win for us the consumer.

In my opinion i don't think AMD will get the performance crown again.

I think they will carry on selling their cpu's at a lower price to try to compensate.

Yh a windows 8 laptop based on kal-el would be plenty powerful for most people.

Intel prices would probably go up but not that much.

and if thats the case ultimatly who cares, we as the consumer will benefit from amd forcing intel not to inflate there prices, zeal for a particuler brand is ultimatly foolish.

Being the only player in a market, yes, you dictate the price. ARM isn't mature enough for the desktop space yet.. Give it 5 years

$1000 mainstream cpus would price a hell of a lot of people out of x86, pushing them towards arm. its no good making a 500% margin on every chip if only a handful of people are buying them.

no doubt the prices would go up, but not by such a large amount.

edit: also we already have a bulldozer thread so dont know why these new ones are popping up

i find it impossible to believe even if bulldozer failed to meet expectations that they would suddenly dissapear overnight, they are ati who seem quite succefull, they have some rather good products in there fusion range, there legacy range still sells fine. I would think it would just be a case of oh well try again.

tbh in some ways i applaud them because i have often thought i will not buy a nvidia gpu, not because of anything other than cuda, not because cuda etc is bad but rather it is a closed standard and ati seem to be persuing an open standard, and we could all gain from the competition in this area but right now it seems to be cuda or nothing, and they are also persuing more cores, you can look at it two ways, their singl core performance isnt as good as intels but is it there fault software often isnt programmed to take advantage of multithreading as well as it could, vice versa it isnt up to software developers to code for this, but i do think it is the way forwards.

Even if they were finished, it's in the niche enthusiast market. It's nothing compared to the general consumer market in which far more chips are sold.

my cpu "ignorant" colleagues who purchase our servers are currently buying more opteron servers than xeon. that says a lot, if bulldozer is a flop, not a whole lot will change but us the enthusiast will probably pay more as a result.

thats a simplistic attitude, a 4 cylinder engine can beat a 8 cylinder engine in terms of power as easily as the reverse is true, it is only one part of the story. Ultimatly we only care which is faster in terms of cost, how it does it really doesnt matter to much as long as it does do it.

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication

lol all theyll do if slower is price to what it sells.

they dont have to beat intel they just need to price them right.
