If CP2077 launched as the game it is today, would it have lived up to the pre-release hype?

Unchecked hype often leads to unrealistic expectations, if you let the train run away, you'll only ever be disappointed.

I actually thought the game was really good at release, and by the time I played again around patch 1.6 it was absolutely epic and Phantom Liberty just made it even better, it exceeded my expectations by a mile, but I guess that comes from growing up with 8-bit games where most of the immersion is made within my imagination.

I guess also having a background of computer tech and 3d programming (just a hobby), I am reasonably aware of what is practicable within a game on todays hardware. In saying that though the advent of actual AI into games will be the next big leap in immersion, where having a conversation with an npc will be viable and mind blowing.

I think the game, as it is today, would have delivered for most people. It is fun to play, runs well and looks great.

As another poster said, there will always be some moaners- those people are never satisfied.

I haven't played Cyberpunk yet. Very rarely do I buy games on release anymore. They are nearly always riddled with problems and It takes them a few patches to get right.

The problem with Cyberpunk was the Witcher 3. The Witcher 3 was almost the perfect game. To beat that, they had to be ambitious and push the boat out. However it didn't work out for them. They made a good game. It's just not as good as the Witcher 3 where everyone was expecting it to be better.

As someone said, if CP2077 came out before The Witcher 3, I think the reviews would have been a lot different.

No. But then the Witcher games didn't live up to the fan hype for me either.

However... I've put over 200 hours into CP2077 and PL and 100% it. I enjoyed almost every moment of it, but still felt like what I was promised wasn't delivered.

The original skill tree, crafting and inventory item affects on stats was utter crud. The graphical glitches, the bugs and the shallow and hollowness compared to what was "promised" was a let down, but it doesn't make it bad game, just poor PR. CDPR damaged their rep, but they've supported it and fixed and polished a lot in order to repair some of that lost trust. I hope they have learned a lesson though.

Not sure as I don't know what it was hyped to be, I just know the hype train was strong. The following is from the point of view, is this a great game now. And is my personal opinion.
I try to go into games as blind as possible and avoid even trailers. Imo, I enjoyed CP at launch and only saw a few bugs, nothing out of the ordinary for a new open world game. Gameplay was solid, but nothing new (upper mid tier).
Playing it after the dlc drop, there are welcome gameplay changes but overall in the same ballpark 7 to a 7.5. Graphics effects is in the top tier and probably the best. Graphics style isn't quite right for me, something just doesn't quite do it for me. Which is surprising as neon cyber style is my fave and has the built in bonus of HDR highlights really shining. I kind of get it when i read "the city feels soulless". So, overall CP is an enjoyable solid game, that I also enjoy to use as a quick demo to friends to show what pc is capable of today. It has goat effects, but due to art style, isn't the most immersive. Gameplay 7.5/10, gfx effects 9.5/10, game world 8.5 Overall 8.5

That is an understatement and also a major issue with the game as it tries to be.

I played it on release pretty much as if a straight shooter and was fortunate on my first play through not to encounter any game breaking bugs, at least not ones which couldn't be fixed by reloading the last save game and/or restarting the game every 2 hours to prevent performance degradation. In that respect it wasn't a bad experience as some of the story elements are very good. But the game as it purported to be fell far far short and still doesn't hit that spot in my opinion.

I've not tried the last couple of updates but I was still getting game breaking bugs unfortunately on trying to replay it which were complete show stoppers within an hour or so of playing if not earlier - in one instance I didn't even get 5 minutes in before the cybernetics stuff stopped working and no amount of reloading saved games, etc. would fix it.

Having paid full price at release, I’ll not pick up the DLC until it’s cheaper than it currently is.

Game was good, not great.
