If Halflife 3 was linux exclusive would you change OS?

Nope. I barely have time to play games as it is, so I'm certainly not going to jump through hoops because Gabe Newell has gone power-mad.

It would be a stupid move anyhow. Is Gabe scared of competition or something? This whole Windows 8 thing stinks of 'Oh ****, Microsoft are about to ditch that GFWL rubbish and start selling games through a dedicated Xbox Live hub! We might actually have some competition!'. Right now, Steam IS PC gaming. Sure, there's other stores, but Steam is more than that. It's an end-to-end community. Xbox Live on W8 is going to offer something very similar.

Why would he be worried about something that's boung to be selling either overpriced games or mobile apps similar to Angry Birds?

Gabe Newell did this with the PS3 too. Now Steam is on the PS3.

Windows 8 is nowhere near as bad as it's hyped up to be. Steam won't be going anywhere.

I see his logic with the "hedging strategy" though in a way. It isn't a big investment to get Steam working on Linux and they can encourage people to migrate when Windows starts becoming Windows Phone.

PC Gaming as it is currently is going to be dying anyway (although I'm talking LONG term) and I'm sure Gabe is well aware of that. Say what you want, but the desktop PC probably isn't going to be around much longer. I expect to see migration to different systems soon. Phones will take over for the average joe and it's inevitable games will be moving to a different system too, eventually.

Nonetheless it's clear that MS wants to integrate Windows and Windows Phone together to a great extent and that's probably fine due to where the market is right now.

I love Linux though, so I'd be really happy to see that support for proper desktop distros as Windows moves on. If we get some time in which all of the stuff that needs a desktop right now is running under Linux then that would be great.

I don't think so. I can see them moving towards RISC, low power and a smaller size but i can't imagine phones and tablets and the like ever fully replacing desktops. They offer to much functionality and productivity that would be impossible to replace with another device.

people still care about half life

Why wouldn't we? There was a long gap between HL1 and HL2 and it didn't stop HL2 being a great game, so I have no doubt HL3 will be epic. So yes I care :D.

The same doom and gloom talk has been going on for years but the PC still keeps on going and I expect it to for years to come.

got kde setup it's pretty windows like once you take the time to tinker.
but linux music players are horrible, have to make do with foobar2k via wine.
no program i've tried is as good as media player classic.

i suspect if people do move to linux then wine will be invaluable to try and get program you've gotten used to to run.

You know there's not going to be a HL3 right? Gabe's preoccupied..

I wouldnt go over to Mac for a game, imagine the cost. I imagine thousands would though.

Not a chance in hell.

If Gabe wants to be an ass, throw a hissy fit and do something stupid like this just because he's scared his wallet might not be quite as fat as he is any more after Win8 launches then that's his problem.

:p
