If I have to replace my Sky Router? Should I get their Hub 2 or 3... Or something else?

So I think my old Sky sagecom router is possibly failing.

They said I can buy a Sky Hub 2 or 3 off them? Any recommendations if it comes to that?

If it's faulty then they should replace free of charge...

Years out of warranty... Just wondering if any other folks here have experience of the Hub 2 or 3 etc?

Main concern really is ensuring wifi is not worse than my old Sagecom!

I'd say Hub 3. Ask to be put through to broadband cancellations as I'm almost sure they can do the hub 3 free with a recontract. Dual band wifi, ac support and two Gigabit Ethernet ports.

We still have about 9 months of a contract left (for a lower price) etc...

So I can't threaten to leave etc.

The gigabit ports will be useful, because all the rest of the network is gigabit switches/PCs etc...

but without the router provided by them the service wont work anyway.

so they should provide a new one???

Regardless of warranty... You're in a contract for them to provide a service. They cannot ask you to pay for a new modem/router if the other one you have is faulty.
Tell them you want a new router/modem - free of charge!

I don't think it works that way.. They gave me a free router X years ago, and now if it fails? It's the same with their Sky boxes too.

I'm in the same boat with BT.

Either I pay £50 for a new smart hub, sign up for a new contract which I'm not sure I want to do since we should be getting FTTC next year and I want choices of isp or buy one myself.

I'm leaning towards the Billion-8800NL or TP-Link Archer VR600. Both have ADSL and VDSL modems. hmmm

I've had one of mine break and my parents-in-law go twice, on all three occasions I've simply called up and asked for a new one for free or for them to provide me with my username and password. As you're not allowed to use third party routers they're basically holding you to ransom.

So the argument is simple, they want to charge you for a service you can't receive without their equipment that they expect you to pay for? This doesn't make sense :p Do not pay for a new one!

/edit - Bah - meant to quote the post that you quoted :p

So?

Most ISP give you free routers. You're in contract with them, so they need supply you their service. If "their" modem is faulty and out of warranty, that is not your fault, most you pay should be P&P.

Phone them, explain the problem. Tell them you request an engineer visit or a replacement router free of charge.

Keep complaining till they send you a free one.

Is this from experience?

And of course all they'll do is send be a reconditioned Hub 2, which they sell for £25 (or so)... Where as by the sounds of it the Hub 3 is the better option!?

Yep, keep complaining.

I have not paid full price for Sky since I last moved,(4 years) managed to get a new HD box for 25 quid from them and have home hubs 4 and 5 from BT as exchange items as I kept on complaining about Wifi dropout.

Complaining does work.

However failing that. Pick up a HH 5 off the internet for 10 - 15 quid.. the sticky shrub are pretty good for that.

I would have no issues with Sky not giving you replacement hardware out of a warranty period if they were happy to hand over your connection credentials when asked.

Since they won't do that, and instead sort of force you into taking their (in the case of the post-Netgear pre-Q hardware) poor quality options, they should really be replacing them FOC.

As a new sky adsl broadband customer it seems you can get a sky q hub=5ghz for £20 versus £10 for an older hub, is it worth getting ?
(surpsrising you cannot twist their arm if the old hub goes wrong in contract)

Indeed, as [RB] said if you cannot use a 3rd party router with sky hub (I did not know that- I could with plusnet) what other options are there for 5GHz ?

Hub 3 is definitely worth it as a new customer, yes. Be aware it only has two Ethernet ports now though.

Hub 3's are now free of charge for Fibre Max customers as well.

Thanks , Hub 3 aka Q hub, it seems

off'ish topic - so after 2 minutes of googling apparently the new Q tv advert I just saw is Idris Elba - I guess these adverts are not targetted at my demographic - I wondered if an older Usane Bolt had been pinched by sky from Virgin
