ive always been a fan of base building rts games ever since dune on ps1 back in the day and old red alert. love cnc3 and recently got kanes wrath, not tried new red alert because i missed it because of new year which is a shame. i was wondering if i like those will i like starcraft, i didnt actually realise it was a base building game though, looking up videos, it looks so much more complicated than that. can anyone give me a tl;dr ? or a 101 ? looks quite a complex game, i really want to try it out. also, im interested in supreme commander.

Not really sure what to say about it apart from watch some of these videos, http://www.youtube.com/user/day9tv sc2 is amazingly fun, even the custom games alone i would pay for. It's not to complicated. Takes a little while to get used to but its kind of simple.

Lol simple? Are you GM? Honestly the game is far from simple. The basics are fairly easy to grasp but that's it. Unless you just cheese and all in your way to masters.

^^ This - basics are easy to pickup but the gameplay itself can be incredibly complex.

I remember watching in awe back in the day when I had maybe a couple of months experience of SC1 watching one of my friends play (who at the time was ranked about #3 in the UK) how every aspect of his setup was interlocking, intrinsically setup with complicated layers i.e. his science vessels were extending the range of his siege tanks which in turn were position in such a way as to force the enemies hand so that if they tried to take one of his ostensibly undefended outposts it would expose vulnerabilities in other parts of their setup he could use to attack and the nature of that setup meant that a good player would think it through and be forced to avoid attacking his science vessels and a poor player would headlong rush into attacking them as they seemed weak, opening them up to attack - and I can't really explain just how clever his setup was overall :D

EDIT: Then he quit the game when it became all about "clicks per second" or whatever.

Starcraft 2 is the pinnacle of the genre.

I couldn't agree with you more.

SC2 is absolutely great but it's very different from CnC3 and has a huge following. It's probably the only game I can tell you i'll definitely be playing for the foreseeable future (years and years!)

It's easy to learn the basics but the basics won't get you out of Bronze, you need to be able to spend time on research at the beginning about units and builds amongst over things. It's just so addictive.

I meant that its simple to get used to, It doesn't exactly take you a year to learn the basics of the game does it?

Starcraft 2 is the pinnacle of the genre.

Easy to Learn, Hard to Master

Both so true.
And don't worry about getting flattened game after game... If you've played some RTS before, it won't take long for the matchmaking system to find other people as terrible as you :-)
So yes, I'd definitely recommend getting this game. It's the first RTS I've spent more than a few months playing, and definitely the best

i loved C&C3 online, only played 2campaigns of starcraft - the units and building / economy is more complicated than C&C though........C&C is very accessible ..... It does not follow that you will like SC ..... you will probably like me enjoy single player ... if you're hardcore you might like the mp..

well its only the past few days ive got serious on cnc3, its just so addictive. spending hours on skirmish against hard/brutal ai. thinking upnew tactics. i always used to turtle and just base build but it got me nowhere, trick ive found is to get as much tech and estabolishment built in the least amount of time and get as much economy up and running as possible. still in early days with little tactics like scouting and stuff like that, ill get there. i manage to get a crane, 2 ref, a war f, 2 pp and a harvester built in a minute 45 sec.

Hmmm in my experience of starting from never having played SC2, it's really not that complicated. I struggle to see how SC2 has complicated economy/tech tree... SCVs collect minerals, if you need vespene gas, build a refinery and use SCVs to collect vespene gas. As for tech tree, barracks builds infantry, factory builds vehicles and starport builds aircraft. Build a tech lab for more advanced units and a fusion core for the highest tech units. You shouldn't find it too difficult - with a bit of experimentation you should be able to work out how the team you are playing works by messing around in skirmish for half an hour or less.
