If Valve made an Operating System for gaming would you switch from Windows?

But your reason for not wanting to is because you don't want another box in the living room. Don't you think that's a little short sighted? Computers are becoming Ubiquitous so surely it would make sense to enable users access to their software from multiple platforms?

Exactly, eventually hardware will become so similar, that people will be using 'services' rather than picking a particular 'hardware'. I.e one service of your choice that will run over multiple devices.. PlayStation are going this way as well.

With regards to Valve's reason for doing this, yes it will help them but also will be helping the PC gaming industry as a whole. Why should Windows be the only platform for gaming? I would rather use Steam the service on a variety of devices, not just confined to a Windows based PC.
 
Is it Linux with a Steam type interface or a hybrid OS? What sort of limitations could this have for graphics architecture, if any? I don't know anything about this stuff so please forgive my ignorance :)

No, I think it is a very contemporary view. In many cases DVD players have been replaced by consoles, and VHS recorders by Sky+ or similar devices. TVs have more built in to them now.

I'd do away with them all if they could be built in to a TV, but I don't think that's what Steam are offering here.
 
To be honest, everyone is not really giving this a chance. Let's see how it performs compared to Direct X games (I assume it'll be using Open GL or whatever Linux uses as a graphics accelerator).

If it performs the same as Windows, with the Majority of games being released for it. I'd definitely give it a try. Though as with many, as I've never used Linux, I'd be a bit wary as it's open source. I'd have to give it a chance and see what I use on it. as I don't really use my gaming PC for anything other than Games, Streaming content and internet browsing.
 
I can't wait - have an old laptop under the tv acting as a media server currently. If I can put Steam OS on it, still stream music & video, and then also stream my games library from my gaming laptop upstairs in a playable manner... then this is a big winner for me.

Really does sound awesome.

Hmm it's got potential... but I hope they still allow the features of a Linux OS to be accessible for those that would want it... As in it arrives as what is essentially a stripped down version of Debian/Ubuntu/(not sure if we know where its roots lie yet) which has been streamlined for gaming - but if you then want to add other things like a torrent client or XBMC or some retro game emulator then it's as easy as it would be on any normal distro
 
I can't help but see this as a bad thing, i want to see it as beneficial but Gabes hatred of everything Microsoft and desire to push people towards linux in a world that is already so windows heavy in every aspect just seems counterproductive.

I think that's quite an exaggeration of Gabe's standpoint. I don't think he has a hatred of everything microsoft, and his opinions of Windows 8 were taken out of context. It was clear that he was talking about the whole locked down Windows Store sort of thing that they had going on.

I'm probably just a bit bitter that his focus is completely the opposite of what i want from gaming to be honest. I'll wait and see what the final two announcements they have before passing judgement though.

In all honesty i guess i was hoping Valve were doing something more with their time than some OS and wanting people to move to their living rooms.
 
It does seem a bit like Valve are trying to be Android for games consoles. It will definitely be interesting to see where it goes.
