If you could change UK speed limits..

retarded 20 zones and stupid 50mph on old NSL roads in the country

also ban lorries from anything but inside lane on dual carriageways

Banning lorries would be good.

Speed limits in the country don't mean anything, they're just a guideline as nobody enforces them anyway if you're not being plain stupid.

A school near us has a 20 limit outside it, but when the schools isn't open (evenings and late afternoons) it is still 20, but the road is wide, with a field at one side of it and barely any houses, and you still get pulled for going over 20 even though before the 20 and after the 20, the limit is 30. They could use those stupid flashing warning signs to vary the speed limit...

Add 10mph to every speed limit except around schools.

Change motorway from "overtaking lanes" to 70and under.. 80mph.. 80-120mph

The motorway limit is something which will remain, as a lot of people drive cars not suited to fast driving/stopping/steering out of harms way at 70mph, let alone 120mph :p
Plus, a lot of people are not capable of judging weather they can move to a different lane. Cue some idiot doing a 'legal' 120mph in the overtaking lane in traffic, and someone pulling out into said lane (BANG). You aint stopping any car on the road from 120mph in a hurry.

Based on my experience of UK roads motorways could use condition/time based variable limits with harsher penalties.

That is, poor conditions/heavy traffic usage sees a lowering of the limit to less than 70 when appropriate.

Good conditions, low traffic volume would see the limit increased beyond 70, perhaps even unrestricted on the better motorways where volume is low.

Breaking either limit should carry harsher penalties however.

As always, irrespective of limits the UK needs a comprehensive review of driver training and the levels required to obtain a licence. It's far too simple and far too easy as of now.

Sounds good in theory but any time I see variable limit signs or the 50 is up on the m11 due to conditions next to no one takes any notice and carried on at 70+.

The limit doesn't need raising to 80, lots do it anyway taking into account the over read they know they will be fine. I'd be happy for them to raise limits on motorways if they had more cameras to catch people when the speed varied due to conditions and to monitor driving standards. So they can catch the people sitting 1 foot off my bumper while I'm passing a line of nose to tail lorries :D

There's a 20mph zone near me which I think works quite well. It's a one-way road with a school on it but the road is quite narrow with lots of cars parking on it as it's mostly residential.

There are plenty of these zones which make no sense though. Also, the abundance of 50mph limits near me really annoys me. The accidents are caused by people ignoring the speed limit anyway, so how on earth is lowering the limit going to help? You just penalise those who drive responsibly.

Interesting. Two pages of replies and no one has suggested some actual research be done to find out what impact different speed limits would have, just a bunch of opinions? Congrats - you are all the government.

I'd suggest motorways to 80mph - it's like that in most Europe and the world isn't ending contrary to what some "omg speed kills" people might have you believe - I find 70mph pretty sad for modern motors on motorways.

There's nothing wrong with the limits as they are, just get rid of the speed cameras etc for those who want to go a little faster.

We are OcUK motors and have the most elite opinion on everything. Research is not required.

What are these "limits" you speak of?

I think the motorway limit should be 80. There are a lot of roads which were 50s that went down to 40s and a lot of single carriageway roads that were NSL, but have been lowered for no discernible reason. Apart from that, I don't have too much of an issue.

All I'd really change is the ridiculous random 40/50 limits in the middle of nowhere on ex NSL roads.

Same here. Also some sections of road that have been stuck with a 50 limit where there is no logical reason.

Do excuse my ignorance. So to summarise the words of enlightenment in this thread...

The new speed limit will be 30, unless its outside a school in which case its walking pace, unless its a secondary school in which case its 90 (Natural selectino). If the school is on a dual carridgeway, its 70, unless there is no a central reservation, in which case its 60, unless its during the summer holidays in which case its 90. Easter holiday its 85, because this holiday moves and people will get it wrong. And killed.

Motorways, its a default of 90-120, depending on the mood of the variable speed limit operator. If there are clouds its 20, and if theres fog you should pull over. Snipers will be deployed to eliminate lorry drivers who dare to overtake each other and nervous drivers will directed into the hard shoulder to await death. Boy racers will be encouraged to drive at 90 (Or 95 if they have an induction kit) at all times and in all weather, on the condition that they only crash into each other.

Have I missed anything?

The Autobahn has no limit and that works fine. Why can't we have even near to that.. Such as 100 MPH.

Most people on the motorway already do more then 70.

This.

Germany hasnt spontaneously combusted due to the Autobahns having no limit so im unsure why so many people assume that a similar system here would result in CERTAIN DEATH (well according to Brake at least...)

Almost.

Only a 20MPH penalty for fog, only 10MPH if you have front fogs.

Well this is a discussion forum, not a research group or think tank. Things tend to work on opinions.

What research precisely?

You can do research and get any results you like depending on what you are researching and how.
