You can use a 30gb ssd for OS install no problems.
As long as you have a second drive to install all apps on.
Basically install your OS ( Win 7 or what ever ) on the ssd and then when you install apps install them all to a secondary drive. Also set your My Doc ( etc ) directories to the second drive.
The system will run quicker than using a mechanical drive for OS. What people have forgotten to mention here is the windows swap file. Basically when Windows runs it uses a file on the install drive to store data from memory when your memory is full. U will find that most moderm games will end up forcing windows to use a swap file due to the amount of data ( texture data etc ) they use. Due to the fast write speed on the ssd you will see great system performance gains.
