Im at a crossroads,,

Im planning on getting a mobo/cpu/ram upgrade done this week as my motherboard is failing on post
takes me about 45 minutes to get it to boot, it powers on then powers off 2 seconds later then does that over and over sometimes i will see the boot process led go through different bootup post codes then it will power off again and reboot and this time nothing on the lcd showing it booting up then it will power off again rinse and repeat..

Gigabyte Z97Xoc Force board
with 4790k @4.8

once the system does boot it will work perfectly until i shutdown then same crap again lol

anyway i think the motherboard has issues

hence really needing a mobo/cpu/ram upgrade as z97 takes DDR3 so i would be requiring DDR4

what would you go for, im getting told over and over by people that 8700k is the choice with z370mobo
but ryzen 2 has just been released and its not so much the cpu im interested in funnily enough its the motherboards x470 motherboards look great.. and 2700x does not look like its that far behind intel this time and seems the memory issues that where there with the 1st gens are almost ironed out.

so im in a bit of a dilema what would you guys go for
i dont mind going either way im not tied to intel or amd as in being one sided......

Depends on how long you tend to keep your PC before upgrading, going AM4 will give you, according to AMD, another 1 or 2 CPU generation upgrades on the same AM4 socket.

..something you most definitely won't get with Intel.

The new 2700X looks like its going to be a nice CPU according to leaked benchmarks and will be (slightly) faster than the 8700K in everything except gaming where AMD still tends to be (slightly) slower, where single core speed and IPC still matters most.

Budget 1.2k dont mind what i go for to be honest i7 8700k though seems the logica choice given that its faster for gaming.
and i cant wait as my system could give up the ghost anytime as there is definatlly something fishy with the board and to strip the syttem would take quite a wile and i would rather upgrade since im having to dismantly the watercooling setup anyway and would rather not run into issues that way i can also test the motherboard bare bones and see if its fixable that way i can sell the cpu/mobo/ram that i currently have to make some of the cash back.

so yeah 1.2k is my budget though must incl monoblock or waterblock
and motherboard/cpu what do you guys suggest looking for the best motherboard memory will be around 3200-3866 anything faster probably woudlnt boot up at low latency anyway...

choices ? system will be paired with 2x gigabyte cards 1080ti watercooled cards.
pci express lanes must include 16x16x when paired.

That's a good budget :) though about going HEDT?

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,140.42 (includes shipping: £10.50)

The 8 core TR might do, and would allow enough budget for 32GB of RAM over 4 sticks, though that spec above would still leave 4 slots free for a later upgrade if needed.

EDIT: Re Lanes - TR gives you 60 to play with, so the 1080Ti's would be fine - and you'd still have enough left over for NVME RAID or some other high end bits if needed

You can't wait 3 days? That's why Ryzen 2 comes out.

why not just get a 2nd hand mobo or new one test it if new board works perfectly good pc again which will be good for a few years yet.if its not mobo could send it back.

8700k if gaming is your main thing.if multitasking editing then consider ryzen.

Looking at it, for Ryzen the gaming is going to be close enough to 8700K (once everything is taken into account) to... be approaching "splitting hairs" about it. The Intel folks will find reasons 8700k wins, AMD folks, the other way.
In everything outside gaming, Ryzen will have a fairly significant lead. Time going forward, game engines will improve in multi-threading and it'll shift further in Ryzens favour.

My take, there's possibly my 2700X at the post office, memory bought since Feb and board hopefully here Friday so, probably some fair bias involved. I think we'll see Ryzen on a well done setup trading blows though.

Obviously a cavet comes with what I am about to say, but pre-NDA review benchmarks have shown the ryzen 2700 and X variants are at the 8700k level of performance, and in gaming, with two 1080tis, there are very few games where you will notice a difference. I would have said AMD route is more wallet-friendly as well, given you should be able to have the same mobo for several generations of CPUs, but with two 1080tis I am guessing finances are not a consideration.

Title sounds like a techie version of Blind Date :D

Well OP if I was a cpu id be the 8700k because I'm fast, hot and if I came to your house id be bringing my tooth paste

I will be upgrading to a Ryzen 2600, maybe even a 2600X given they are still only about £200.

I may stick with my current Motherboard, or i may upgrade to a Gigabyte B450.

Why? Ryzen 2 looks like a good step up from Ryzen 1. and because the CPU's are so inexpensive its a cheap upgrade.

OK guys thanks for the info`s ;)
i think im going to wait until the full reviews are out for ryzen then decide then... im i really going to notice a difference between the 2 with 2x 1080ti`s i dont think i would
and i think the ryzen 2700x would get better and better from what i have seen so far though there is definatly room for ryzen to improve where as 8700k has been out a while so even more performance to be gained.

i will wait, though speaking of ryzen, what would be the best board to pair with ryzen 2700x board with most features :) very high end.
and what memory to get, memory must be 32gb im thinking the 8 pack stuff 3200 or 3866 as i think that would be the most compatible.

i have had gigabyte before so im guessing gigabyte again for the board ? thanks for the help guys.

I just upgraded from my 7 year old i7 2600k to an i5 8600k setup for a net cost of £200 which was as good as I could do. Managed to purchase 16gb DDR4 memory, MSI Z370 board and the CPU for £415 altogether and sold my outgoing components for as near as makes no difference £215. Totally worth it so far!

I already have a decent enough 4.5ghz 5820k which will do me until next year and i will see how the 3xxx series is from AMD - hoping its gonna be a stormer. Want min 8 core for next upgrade, would prefer 10 or 12 core AM4 stuff but thats not likely.
Just went to a 1080ti as my fury died and i killed my vega 56 - so not needing owt there.
