If your other half asked to watch Star Wars...

To finish the thread's title, If my other half asked to watch Star Wars, I'd probably think I'd died and gone to heaven. She hates Star Wars, and I'm a massive fanboy. Thankfully it's one of the few things we disagree on!

As for your question, I'd show her episode 4,5,6, then 1,2,3. No question there, the originals are utterly superior. I wouldn't say that I dislike the prequels, some things in them are terrible, but I still enjoy them. Having said that, I enjoy a lot of the content that's been released since the advent of the prequels, the era in general, the EU around it, and even the cartoon series Clone Wars which I think is fantastic (I have a friend that works on it in Lucasfilm Singapore, so perhaps I'm biased).

I'd leave it up to her, but I'd make it abundantly clear that the new films are utter garbage.

She watched the original trilogy with me when I got them on DVD, as she'd never seen them before, and she quite enjoyed them. I doubt she'd want to watch the prequels though. I've made it clear that they're crap and I think she trusts my opinion on films enough to not want to bother. She's busy enough without wasting time watching films that someone who knows their way around films and knows what she likes has said are rubbish.

Everyone is saying the new films are rubbish, but I believe this is only true for Episode 1 & 2, Episode is 3 is pretty good i think, does no one else agree?

All three are good movies, visually awesome and stunning to look at with all aspects but yeah, all three of them are horrendously bad when it comes to dialogue and cheesy gags. Out of the three the last one is by far the best/darkest and most enjoyable to watch because of the battles and sword fights.

That said, I still do like the Phantom Menace, I think the lightsabre duel and some of the battle scenes make up for the awful acting and characters.
A friend of mine mentioned how he'd never seen Star Wars before, so my other friend said he'd lend him the DVDs.

Later on, I heard the friend that hadn't watched Star Wars before come into our room (shared military training accommodation) and he said "Right done with Episode 1, can I borrow Episode 2 now?".

Never has something made less sense.

We probably look back on the originals with complete nostalgia. Whereas people who have never seen them will probably enjoy the newer ones more because of the visual effects which are with the times.

I was more concerned about the fact that the story will be completely and utterly broken. Surely if you watch the films in chronological (storyline wise, not release date wise) order, then in The Empire Strikes Back when you find out *SPOILER* that Vader is Luke's Dad, you'll think "Errm, yeah... no ****".

The only bits I enjoy in Episodes 1, 2 and 3 are where they almost cleverly reference the original trilogy, or make some sort of link to the story that occurs later on. Without that, you don't only break the story of the original troligy, but you take the only enjoyable part of the prequels and lob it out the window.

Part of the problem may have been due to the fact that the person who lent him the DVDs was born in 1992.

I would ignore the existence of the prequels. If she asked to watch them I would refuse and probably slap her for suggesting such a stupid thing.

Huge fan of the wars since I was a youngen. Interestingly enough the first I ever watched aged 6 or thereabouts was Jedi, then later Hope and Empire.

I suppose Jedi appealed to me most because of being young and the Ewoks etc.

Anyway, I like the first three films. Admitedly they are a bit more jokey and have lost some of the originals mystique but the only thing that annoyed me about Episode 1 was JarJar. The rest was good, Darth Maul was epic.

Episode 2 and 3 tell the story and progressivley get darker with Anakin's turning to the dark side. Amazing visuals and the clone army/jedi battles are stunning. Yoda kicking ass at the end of Episode 2 and 3 was literally insane. I didn't know it was comming at the cinema and when he force pulls his lightsabre out to fight Dooku I think I nearly wet myself with excitement ! :D

Anyway, coming back to the OP, my Mrs did ask to watch them all recently. Mainly due to the fact they were all shown on ITV the past few weeks from 1-6 in "order". She hasn't seen the old ones in Aaages so we sat and watched them all. I also told her all the bits that had changes and what they used to be. Fun was had by all ;)

Never really got star wars. It's pretty boring, really isn't it. It seems a lot of people like star wars just because liking star wars is seen as cool. Tbh I'd rather stab my eyes with rusty forks than watch a star wars movie

Now that's not really true, is it? It's practically the most successful franchise ever. Has to be for a reason, that reason was the original movies. It was new, innovative and awesome at the time. Still is, even the prequels.

The sequels are too slow paced.

Put them on, but by the time you get to Padmé and Anakin rabbiting on about the trade federation and their undying love in Episode 2, she'll have dumped you.
