IKEA Fredrick with monitor and case on same shelf?

Hi,

I got a Fredrik desk today (cheap used one) and was wondering if it is OK to have a 22 inch monitor and a case (very heavy) on the same shelf above the main desk.

I don't see the shelf bend or look as if it's giving in to the weight. I sometimes even put my both feet on the left side of the monitor while I watch a movie or something and just relax my full weight on the shelf (me being about 70kg) that has the monitor and case on it. I don't see or hear any constraint on the shelf or desk as a whole.

I've had a look underneath the shelf and everything looks fine. Please tell me this is a safe setup.

Anyone else confirm that they have monitor and case on same shelf?

this is a safe setup

Are you sure? Because I've been reading a lot of posts around forums saying that it should really hold only one 19" monitor maximum.

Anyone have any idea what's a safe weight limit on the smaller shelves on the Fredrik?

I've also never come across anyone who has posted a picture with the monitor and case on the same shelf on this desk.

Anyone else got this setup (monitor and case on same shelf) so I can be assured that its OK?

I have one of those desks in the spare room holding a 22" asus monitor and an asus barebones unit. Though the tower and monitor is on the larger desk area. I have the two smaller sized shelves up top holding odds and sods. I don't know if I would trust the smaller shelves with all the weight. With a full size keyboard and the tower on the same desk space it doesn't leave a lot of room for using the mouse. But it's a spare machine for the spare room when I have people staying over that need a machine (so they don't use mine dammit!).

I know the full desk can easily hold a couple of monitors together with a full packed case. But my question is regarding the smaller shelves as I had shown in the screenshot. Is it ok to put monitor plus a case on one of those small things?

I can't put case on floor because (a) Too much dust in my room (b) I don't have any space now on the floor since the Fredrik has a barrier in the middle.

I can't put the case on the main desk either, since like above, I can't use my mouse and keyboard together. My room is tiny, so this is the only config I can do with the Fredrik. I just need some feedback from anyone who has a setup similar to this for a while without problems.

I assume by 19" monitor they are referring to a big heavy CRT, which probably weighs about the same as your case. The fact that your case is resting on the strongest part of the shelf makes me think it's perfectly safe.

A 19" LCD would weigh what, 3kgs? No chance a wooden shelf would have such a low weight limit.

I have the same desk. My monitor has adjustable height so I don't have the shelf at the bottom but above instead. My PC case is on the floor next to it.

I suspect the shelf will hold the weight but it looks silly.

Yh I agree it looks a bit silly and out of place and doesn't feel right after having it on the floor for decades. But I wana re-arrange things after discovering a tonne of dust behind my old desk and in and around the case. If it wasn't for the dust I'd happily put in on the floor in it's rightful place. Other thing is it doesn't fit on the floor with this new desk cos of that metal plate under the desk. You can see a book shelf on the bottom right of the picture that would block the case on the floor. My room is too small.

@DirtyJester When I go for the switch, I go from behind the left side of the stand and not 'through' the desk.

BTW, my case doesn't feel like it's 3kg. More like it's about 10 or 15 kg! It's kitted up with quality hardware inside:

Asus P8Z77-V DELUXE
Intel Core i5-3570K
G.Skill 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz RipjawsX
Samsung 128GB 830 Series SSD + Seagate 3TB Barracuda HDD + WD Caviar Blue 1TB
ASUS GeForce GTX 560 Ti 448 Cores Direct CU II 1280MB
Corsair 750 Watt Pro Series Gold AX750
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU fan
Plus 3 extra 120mm fans and a couple of additional HDD cages for the Lian Li case, which I bought from overclockers.
