Illegal file sharing on the Internet, what should we do?

Paying for music recordings is a quirk of technology that has now had it's day - sorry boys your gonna have to work for a living doing shows just like your great grand daddy did.

Films I'm not so sure about, it costs a pretty penny to make a modern hollywood film and they have to make that back - but considering the multiple channels they have (cinema, rental, dvd, blu-ray) I can't see downloads being a breaker - in fact reasonable quality streaming or downloads at a low cost (lower than physical DVDs) could be a profitable market.

Games I'm not so sure about, do most games make a lot of money? They're already pirated to hell (less so in the consoles I'm guessing). For me though the convenience of a proper game outweighs the cost - the only problem is often the retail game is more inconvenient due to cd checks and copy protection measures which are just stupid because they all get cracked easily anyway. I use steam wherever I can because it's just so much easier.

Although I agree with that to a point you have to question why they cost so much to make, large sets are becoming a thing of the past, the need to travel to exotic locations has all but been removed (neither of these are a good points by the way) these have been replaced by a few geeks at a workstation.

The majority of the cost must be down to actors wages.

While 20mil is over the top, he is the only reason I even watched the film.

That's quite a sad state of affairs really, there are thousands of better actors that deserve a break and would do the job for far less than £1,000,000. Unfortunately while people simply want to see their favourite actors rather than the movie content it'll never happen.

I see plenty of films with unknown actors, and pass up on films made by known actors. For instance, I love Will Smith comedies, so I have not watched his two non-comedy films. I watch the comedies because they will all have the same style of humour in them. Hancock was not that good of a film, but at least having Will Smith gave me some laughs that another actor would probably not be able to.
At the same time I have watched a number of Japanese / HK movies that have basically unknown actors (to me) in them, simply because the story sounded interesting. How else would have I discovered Infernal Affairs?

You know I have all those games on steam now, I just hate it when people are lying and implying piracy has all these disadvantagesblahblah. I just try all games before buying... All that hassle is 10 minutes of work, and 15quid? You mean 45 euros, we get ripped off in the eurozone by steam if you didn't notice. 10 minutes of work for 45 euros is a very good deal. HL2 hasn't really had any significant updates from release, I have finished the games both legitimately and pirated, same experience. Who's the poor person here, you are the liar here. I don't know why I reply to people talking out of their arse.

Awww.. diddums thinks he is entitled to pirated software. Seriously, so much anger.

And "no significant updates" is irrelevant. You try playing a multiplayer game through steam. It will be useless after a week because even the smallest of updates will render it useless.

Wow! An actual Hollywood talent scout, here, on this forum!

It is a shame they couldn't find one of those for Saw 4, Dr Gordon sucked :D.

Nope, just someone who realises that while people will go to see a film purely based on the lead role very few new people will get a look in.

Do you think the film makers put any effort into looking for new talent to take on the role or just thought "Will Smith will pack them in"? While people are stupid enough to fall for a big name on a billboard actors will be paid silly money. The irony is that if Hollywood spent more time looking for new talent and taking risks current actors would be happier to be paid less for fear of someone new taking the limelight.

cept the fail spelling, nuff said?

Thats so true!!!!!!!!!!! :D

i believe that there is way to much money made in the music and entertainment world, this is why people download stuff illegally because they dont want to pay the hefy price tag.

How many of ocuk users have a legal copy of an operating system ?

my answer is a guess and i say less than 70% of ocuk users have a genuine os

o be honest, im not sure how big an imapct piracy actuall has.

whoactually wants to watche a dogdy screen cam version of a film ,when yo can goto the cinema

what really kills things is day 0 releases. e.g dawn of war 2 is already available and its not out till friday.

With films a lot of them get pirated when they come out on dvd. You download the copy of the DVD and there you have it, a perfect quality DVD for £0

Why is there such a sense of entitlement to music and films? If there is something I think is too expensive for what it is, I don't buy it. It isn't like I have a right to something. I just don't overly like piracy because most of my work involves IP rather than physical property and I really do like getting paid for what I do, so why shouldn't others?

Rank from easiest:

Download from steam/shop website in digital form (doesn't matter which country)
Find in a high-street shop
Physical media from UK based website

After that point I will start looking at downloading the said media. Will not buy from vendors outside UK, as last time (ironically first as well) I bought some dvd's from a US based website that allegedly was trustworthy, ended up with a bunch of bootlegged dvd's, in worse quality then stuff I have previously downloaded.

To me, I made an effort to find the media, if its unavailable in this country legally, I will get it through means of downloading. I am not saying piracy is good, but if the original creator did not think of UK as being a viable market, then they are not loosing out that much.

I am aware that that is a weak justification, but that is what I follow.
