Illegal file sharing on the Internet, what should we do?

Do you mean DVD rental places? If so, then they pay a small amount to the copyright holders each time a DVD is loaned out. The same is true for libraries when they loan books out.

no they dont.

they just pay a one of price to buy the film which is a very high price including royalties to the company

ie. to buy one copy of a film they would pay about £ 50

its not done on a "each time it rents out" basis

As someone else stated I'd be happy to pay a monthly flat fee to access any digital media available (be it game, movie, music, or software). £30 or so a month is both affordable and a reasonable rate and may provide the artists a reasonable living.

Cant see this happening though as there will always be people at the other end of the business (the artists, promotors, managers) all bickering about what percentage of the whole pie they are entitled to. Whilst the world is obsessed with fame and celebrity this will always be the case. Whilst celebrities over emphasise their own importance and have sycophants blowing smoke up their a*** this will always be the case. Heck, so you put out a good tune, in what way does that make you better than say a nurse or paramedic?

....and yes I do write music, and am in a band, and if I write something half decent I want to give it away for free.

Where do you stand morally on piracy? Ignore what the law tells you and ignore what the dictionary says for a minute and give an honest answer, I really am interested to know.

the majority of people will do anything that benefits them if they think they will not get caught, thats just human nature.

morally? well i believe on the value of ideas, and that intellectual labour is as valid as a person making a wardrope or bed etc, but for me this is mainly in the form of credit, i.e. i am the one who discovered this thing etc.. or made it, for someone to steal your ideas and takes credit for them is not right..

piracy is a small % really, more sales wouldnt get the person much richer anyway, just all the other guys who feed of it all.. etc etc

within one week, every pirated game that I have seen which is only available through steam, is unplayable/unusable.

No it isn't. Pirated HL2, ep1, ep2, L4D before buying and had no problems, l4d works fine in multiplayer too with networking apps like hamachi. Get you facts straight first.
The only issue was with l4d that when you uninstalled it, you needed to fix your fonts in windows. Game (l4d) itself was fine and never had any problems in the hl2 games.

That *isn't* human nature. Humans only survived because we work together, it was our defining trait - the society overcame great problems because the group > any individual. Whilst individuals *do* survive on the benefits of others, as soon as a community grows, it is not sustainable, and the selfish individuals will be cast out.

The problem is that selfishness is not scalable, thus we have the tragedy of the commons. But piracy is not about selfishness, it is about breaking and reshaping business models. We *all* benefit when information is shared. Individuals have been exploiting this "lack of sharing" for personal gain for a long time, and piracy breaks that model.

Lack of sharing does not scale, it is as simple as that. It is a dam, waiting to be broken. This is a classic study in the benefits to the individual vs the benefits to the group. The music industry making millions of dollars might benefit society in terms of giving jobs and stimulating the economy, but it also wastes enormous amounts of resources in terms of law enforcement and wasted creativity. It exists to benefit the few thousand individuals who have a direct financial gain from the system, however, it has a great enemy - humanity itself. Because it is in our *nature* to share.

*sigh* So defensive over something so .. insignificant in life.

So you have to use a VPN to play a multiplayer game.. so can you just jump on any old L4D server or whatever? Oh.. no you can't. HL2 is updated all the time, gg trying to play that after a week. You go to all that hassle just to save, what is it, £15? lol, povvo.

You know I have all those games on steam now, I just hate it when people are lying and implying piracy has all these disadvantagesblahblah. I just try all games before buying... All that hassle is 10 minutes of work, and 15quid? You mean 45 euros, we get ripped off in the eurozone by steam if you didn't notice. 10 minutes of work for 45 euros is a very good deal. HL2 hasn't really had any significant updates from release, I have finished the games both legitimately and pirated, same experience. Who's the poor person here, you are the liar here. I don't know why I reply to people talking out of their arse.

cept the fail spelling, nuff said?

I would personally go along the route of advertising. Games can put up posters and labels in the game, this could mean that the game could be sold cheaper/free.

With films I would put in adverts, making it also cheaper/free. If you like it, you could always buy the movie without the adverts in it. If you dont you have to lump the adverts in the film.

Not sure with music but I cant be expected to solve all the worlds media issues in one sitting. :)

Product placement...
As long as it is not taking to an extreme (like the new Knight Rider being nothing but Ford) is ok.

Problem is it's already happening without products prices being dropped.
