Americans can hold dual citizenship. Seems quite strange though! I wonder if she ever worked, I imagine this can't be the first time anyone's noticed in 78 years...

Well nothing would have stopped her if she had done it later on in her life but yes her mother should have had it sorted out. Mind you im not surprised by this, i know a few people who have lived in the UK all their lives but they have no british passport...and they happen to be whites as well. Mind boggling if you ask me, i was under the impression that once your born...your parents get you the british passport or they apply for one.

Since when do you need to present your passport or birth certificate when you get a job?

Well yes, I realise there will be SOME jobs where they do thorough checks. But I'm sure for most jobs they don't check your citizenship beyond simply asking you what it is, and she would have said British because in her mind and to all intents and purposes, she is.

I think it was a couple of years ago Labour brought in a law which made it mandatory to produce ID before commencing work as a defence against the criminal offence of employing illegal immigrants.

No my parents are illegal immigrants from back home..****-land i might add and my birth certificate was forged...hell i think i was swapped at birth. But nevermind these pakis that raised me are decent sort of people and i love them to bits especially my 'fake' mum.

Whats with the stupid questions??. Of course my friggin parents are married legally and my birth certificate is real :rolleyes:

Fair enough but this woman is 80 so will have retired in 1987

I was dimly aware that the law might have changed recently but I know that I've never been asked for that info in all the jobs I've had, at least. In other words, the person who said she mustn't have ever worked was a bit silly
