illegal to drive with broken speedo?

Traffic cops can do it to test the road-worthiness of a vehicle if they feel the need to.
Sometimes done after a collision to test possible defective parts (brakes, steering etc.) that may have a playing part in the collision.

Things that could have just as easily been caused by the collision you mean?

Except they don't, they might drive it to move it off the carriageway after a bump, and may notice a broken speedo....they won't know it was broken before the bump though. If your car is drivable after having a shunt the likelihood is....you'll be driving it home. If its not / the bodywork is not safe it will just be recovered.

Unless of course you've just mowed down a pedestrian...in which case it won't be moved for a long time and you have bigger things to worry about

I know this is all a bit pointless anyway and i do appreciate this is not the angle you were coming from but anyone thinking a traffic cop is going to stop you, climb in and drive your car around is being a bit silly. If your car is in such a state that they would feel the need to stop you for its appearance / complete lack of lights bits of bodywork or exhaust scraping the road etc then again you've bigger problems than the speedo.

Ah, ok :)

How do they test the operation of the speedo? Mine wasn't tested/calibrated when my car was tested 2 months ago :)

No idea, I guess they drive the car.

Unless the law changed in recent years, its fine I think. I used to know someone with a car and a dead speedo and it was that way for years. He said the garage told him its not a problem and they dont test it anyway.

Yes it has changed.

Andi.
