So I've just received my Crucial M4 128GB SSD - Couldn't pass up the deal OcUK was doing!

My motherboard is the Asus P8Z68-v PRO, would I be right in assuming that I use the 6GB/s SATA cable and the SATA 6GB/s connectors on my MOBO?

Secondly, the firmware 0009 release for the SSD, is it just as simple as installing a new driver onto it or is a completely different process altogether?

Please advise.

Thanks in advance!

Just make sure you connect it to a 6Gb/s port on the Intel controller and not any 3rd party one you might have (Marvell etc).

You may find it already has the 0009 firmware on it.

If not, the firmware update comes as an ISO that you burn to CD/DVD and boot from.

Just upgraded to the M4 on Tuesday.

Its very easy to install.

Go to the crucial website download the firmware, burn to disk as an image (extract from .zip first)

Put cd in to computer, go in to bios first and set to ide mode, reboot, computer should be set to boot from disk, cd will load automatically, type yes when prompted to upgrade. Done.

Reboot, back in to bios, switch to ahci mode, reboot, take cd out and go about your business as normal.

Depending on the BIOS and menus on your motherboard the option you are changing to IDE and AHCI will be called something like Storage Controller/Storage Mode/Sata Mode just in case you have any problems :)

Just a quick update - firmware install went perfect.

However, there has been some mixup between my SSD and HDD -

SSD is not picked up in the UEFI BIOS boot priority yet I have managed to install Windows 7 onto it.

My 1TB WD Caviar Black is being picked up in UEFI BIOS boot priority but when booted up into Windows 7 it is not being picked up in My computer as a second drive.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

This is what my disk management looks like:

It's there but just doesn't want to be recognised.

Yep, I would reinstall windows with only the SSD connected and set to AHCI mode.

The reason your drive isn't recognized though it because its not set up yet.

Have you looked in "Disk Management"?

The disk won't appear in "My Computer" until it's been formatted.

Right click on My Computer, select manage, click on Disk Management and hopefully you'll have a disk listed with unallocated space (approx. 931.3GB for a 1TB disk). Right click on the unallocated space to format the drive and allocate a drive letter.

Done it, again thanks for the help, appreciate it. Everything seems to be working fine.

SSD still isn't being picked up in UEFI BIOS but it doesn't matter really since it's the only one with the Windows 7 on it so it default boots from it regardless.

Now onto overclocking my i5! Wooh!

Is that 'System Reserved' bit now on the ssd?

If not, your machine won't boot when the 1TB drive isn't present.

Basically, (going by the pic in post 10) you've got bits of the Windows 7 installed on both drives.

Just got my SSD from OCuK too... knock on the door from DPD at 7:30 on a saturday OUCH!

I too am clueless on this. From this thread it seems i detach the existing 500 gb HDD plug in my ssd, make a firmware CD for 0009 use the instructions ealier in thread to upgrade the firmware.

Install W7 with just the SSD plugged in once this is all done then add back in my 500Gb and new 2TB HHDs,

Does that all sound about right?

Or if anyone knows a comprehensire SSD install guide would be great!

That is correct, but make sure when you update the firmware you have it set to IDE mode and when you install windows you have it set to AHCI mode.
