Hello I have recently needed to upgrade my pc but i dont know if the parts I'm planning on getting will work.

Specs (as of posting)

Cpu. amd athlon ii x4 635 @2.90
Ram. 6gb dual channel ddr2 (4gb in one channel 2gb in other)
Gpu. Nvidia gts250 palit model
Psu. Corsair cx600m
Mobo. Asrock k10n78

I am planning on changing two aspects of my pc which is the cpu to a amd phenom ii x6 1090 black and my gpu to a msi gtx 1060. Would this work. Thank you for any replies in advance

Yes it would work, but honestly I'd save my money and build a skylake system instead if I were you.

I was running a system with a Phenom 965 overclocked and R9-270x until recently and even at that level the CPU was holding the GPU back.

As Wyniro recommends - don't bother with upgrades that really won't cut the mustard anyway.

An alternative would be something like a Skylake system and a second-hand GTX 970 or similar. What's your total budget for the upgrade?

One of the few times in which a recommendation of starting fresh makes sense. You are many many generations behind with this hard-ware and an upgrade just wouldn't make economical sense at this point.

If you give us a budget we could probably spec you a very nice modern build that will last you years, with plenty of upgradability.

i only have a budget of £200

Don't know how you expect to get a gtx 1060 with that budget, even 2nd hand they go for more than that!

For £200 quid, I'd look at an APU build, but you'll still have to go second hand to get anything remotely worthwhile at that budget.

I haven't done an AMD build in ages, so if anyone else could comment or advise on the below perhaps? It was the cheapest I could do without being a bit of an abomination.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £229.65
(includes shipping: £11.70)

You could drop the ssd and stick your old HDD in to save a few pennies, but I wouldn't recommend it at all.

Wait until you've got more cash to spare then go for a cheapish Skylake build (£60 Mobo, sub £200 i5) with a 1060. Upgrading the current rig is just throwing cash away, and any new rig built that cheap is going to be outdated before you've built it, so it will already struggle but also won't be easily upgradeable in the future. Cheaper to do it properly once than do it too cheap and have to do it all again in 12 months time.

Current specs are garbage and the 'upgrade' path is also garbage. Hold out and get a cheap newer system. You'd only need about £450/500 to get a decent base with a future.

Money down the drain whatever you sink into the current rig. Harsh but true.

I would also hold out and get one of the i3 skylake cpus to start as cheap but good, you could pick up a mobo,i3 6100 and 8gb of ram for a little over £200,then go for a used gtx 970

thank you implosiveturnip for your guidence. i have taken it onboard and i am probaly going to go for the pc upgrade as the intel chips are way too expensive for what i have. the system upgrade seemes to be the better option for what resorses i have avalible at the moment to me.

You will see little to no improvement in a system upgrade Matthew. You may aswell be burning your money. Please just save up a bit more and buy a newer base model.
