a few days ago i bought a leadtek 8800gtb to replace my old 7800gtx but for some reason it keeps crashing in oblivion, the game runs flawlessly with all the settings at max but it randomly freezes :(
most of the time the music continues and i can Alt & Tab out of the game but if i go back into it i lose controll of my character and then it freezes again and i have to reset the pc

a few times it has filled the screen with what looks like a corrupted texture when it froze and another time some of the textures seemed to go purple for a few secs

its seems to happen at random because sometimes its in a outdoor area and sometimes indoors, it can happen anywhere from 2mins to 40mins of playing

i tried the latest offical drivers, the beta drivers, the drivers from the leadtek site, a unpatched version of oblivion & oblivion wiht the latest patch but its still happening

i dont think its a problem with the card because Unreal Tournament 3 runs flawlessly with max settings

here is my system

AMD Athlon™ 64 FX-57 Processor
NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT 512MB
SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC3200 Dual Channel Platinum Series
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
Thermaltake Purepower 560W Psu
120gig Maxtor SATA
300gig Maxtor SATA

Try another 1 or 2 games and see if it happened, I found 3DMark06 would never run a full test while having my problems.

I had a similar problem and it ended up being the GFX drivers conflicting with drivers that were already installed, like you I had used the latest drivers, beta drivers etc etc.

Removing the nVidia drivers totally from you're system (all motherboard drivers also), patching up the motherboard drivers again and then using the latest GFX drivers sorted my problem out.

I found it happened a lot in Vanguard and CS:S but other a few other games were fine.

I've got a A8N SLI Premium and a 8800GT as well.

Traditional questions: are you overclocking either the CPU or the GFX? If so, stop it and see what happens.

It sounds to me like overheating somewhere - I had a similar issue with what BFG said was overheating video RAM. That was an 8800GTX though. But symptoms were similar.

BTW, Oblivion does not support Alt-Tab, so Alt-tabbing out of a game, seized or not, will almost certainly cause the game to misbehave badly. The fact you cannot control the character may well actually be a down to his, not the original problem.

tis true the times my firewall has decided to update itself and just completly kill the game, ctrl alt delete and ending the oblivion process gets shut of it pretty quickly mind you, just make sure you save quite often ;)

i had the same thing in etqw - artifacting and random crashes, never happened in any other game. i turned my case fans up and no more problems - with an 8800GTX. could be a good place to start?

First things to check are whether you have the latest drivers for your card, are you overclocking incorrectly and so on.

You also didn't mention if your using XP or Vista (64 bit of 32 bit)

Oblivion comes with a few Unofficial rules that you must follow to keep it stable, but this doesn't apply to everybody.

First NEVER ALT+TAB! It causes oblivion to crash. No fix for it.

Second go to My Documents\My Games\Oblivion and look for a file called Oblivion.ini, copy and paste it to a safe location where it cant be edited and open oblivion again. Oblivion will generate a new oblivion.ini but all your settings will be reset, examples are graphic details etc.

If you still get crashes, go back to oblivion.ini and open it with either wordpad or notepad and use FIND to locate anything that says "save on interior switch, exterior switch, auto save, save on travel, save on rest" and where there is a 1 put a 0. This will disable all of the automatic saves, which are known to make oblivion crash.

Third and final choice is it could be oblivion bloating your save game files, how far are you into the game?

Hope this stuff helps, i'll come back to this thread if you reply.

Does it just randomly freeze or when you alt+tab?

If it's when you alt+tab then that does crash the game. don't think there's a fix for it either.

well thanks for the tips guys, im right at the start of the game so i dont think its a problem with the save file, i tried a clean install of oblivion and it was still happening

im running windows xp home with all the latest updates & i used drivercleaner to uninstall th eold drivers before i installed the new ones

i havent overclocked anything in the system but i think i make have just found the cause of my problems :p

when i installed the new card i just used the power connector from my old 7800gtx & didnt touch the one in the box but i just noticed that my 7800 connector only connected to one of the power cables in the system but the 8800 connecter connects to two, i just put the new connector in and so far i havent had any crashes, i havent used it much tho to be honest but do you think this could have been the cause?

small update :P
i tried 3Dmark06 lastnight when i was using the old connector and it would take ages to load the next test, it also crashed on a black screen before it could complete but i just ran the program again and it loaded the tests perfectly & finished :)

i have a question tho, i only had one power cable with nothing on it & that was the one that my 7800gtx used, the other cable is shared with my dvd drive, will this be ok you think?
