Why do people hotlink to images used in threads on this forum?

This often involves threads being closed. Once you have found an image, it usually takes all of 30-60 seconds to rehost that image on somewhere like imageshack

Just do it :)

because people are lazy and that extra 30-60secs just means most people will either risk the hotlink or not bother posting

Personally never really understood the problem with hot-linking, surely that's the whole point of the internet, a global resource of information that doesn't need to be duplicated over and over.

Yes but when the 8,000 regular members load a thread with a picture linked from another site they aren't likely to be happy about the bandwidth.

:edit: The below reasons too :p

The problem arises when the original owner/host decides to have some fun and change the linked image to something 'slightly dodgy', like a Goat hosted on Sweden's top domain!

Because sometimes, the people who have been hot-linked, change the image to something, let's say.. not family friendly. :p

The problem is that when everyone looks at the thread containing their image, it downloads it from their website. That's sucking bandwidth from their site, whilst it isn;t even in use.

I know it's only relatively minor, but it's kind of a PC rule of the internet.

Exacltly, just use a site that wants you to use their bandwidth for downloading images, and won't change that image to something undesirable later.

If you put something on the internet surely you expect that your content will be viewed and as such shouldn't be able to moan once people do.. No hotlinking rule is silly imo.

Yes, but often that image will be inline within a web page. They want you to view that image within the context of their web page, and not hotlinked, which is simply stealing their bandwidth.

What is hotlinking?

Read above posts - but in essence it's posting an image on a forum when it's still being hosted by somebody else. Bandwidth is being stolen. And as said it's not good form, so they replace the image with something dire. I seem to remember one instance of tub **** being the replaced image :/

you wouldn't say that if you were paying for hosting and you had a monthly bandwidth cap. then someone hotlinks an image and your bandwidth charges skyrocket and you have to pay $$$. or even worse, you reach your cap and your site is taken offline until you pay up. think about it..... :)

It always makes me chuckle when ppl get there knickers in a twist over hotlinking "ONMGNZA NOESSS!!!!11212139249-9-23"
