Simulators are pretty good for practice. It's one of those things that is much easier to learn when young imo.
Here is my FPV setup, had about 12 FPV flights with it so far and about 20 line of sight flights with that plane before I added FPV gear.

Going by my mate's dad's long standing RC plane hobby, what you mostly do with RC planes is crash them in a variety of horrible and hilarious ways and spend 10x more time in the shed putting them back together than flying them.
