Not really as I appreciate and indulge in the luxiouries you mentioned as they all have other uses apart from willy waving. Just that the old wrist flicker is a bit too much of a distraction for an ugly face or small penis...

LOOK AT MY ROLEX!!!! I AM RICH AND IT SERVES NO OTHER PURPOSE THAN DISPLAYING MY WEALTH!!!! LOOK AT IT!!!!

A £10,000 Kia does the same job as a £100,000 Ferrari, so what's the point of the Ferrari right?

HEY LOOK AT ME I HAVE A CHIP ON MY SHOULDER ABOUT PEOPLE WITH WEALTH. Not that you have to be particularly wealthy to own a Rolex.

Some watches can be investments. In such cases you could argue that throwing money away on a fast depreciating car is flashing your wealth more than a sensible investment such as a rare or period premium watch.

LOL you miss the point completely and are uninformed in trying to label me as not being able to afford a rolex.

A cheap 20 pound casio can keep time with a rolex to 99.99% accuracy. price increase for 0.01% increase in performance, 1:1000 ish depending on the wrist flicker.

A c63 amg will wipe the floor with a mondeo tdi. A new c63 costs about 5X the price of the mondeo.

As much as I don't care about people spending millions on watches, the comparison can't be made against cars. It's better to compare it to designer handbags.

A car drives differently, it performs differently, it uses fuel with different efficiency.

A watch tells time, no matter how expensive it is, we share time. An expensive watch doesn't tell better time (one can argue that it tell worse time than a Quartz). It doesn't tell time that enrich your life. It doesn't tell the time in a better quality way in a tangible manner. It is not like you can feel time, like you can feel the G-force in a Ferrari on a corner.

Did I say you couldn't afford one? Learn to read.

Sure you can, a Ferrari doing 70mph on the motorway or sat in traffic is doing what a much cheaper car can do. You spend the extra on the extra performance that you may or may not use. Expensive watches my not tell the time any better but you do pay extra for the prestige, build quality, high quality raw materials and perhaps in the case of dive watches extra water resistance a cheaper watch can't give but you might not even dive. YOu have to pay extra to service the Rolex and it'd be more than a battery replacement on a Casio F-91W.

Some people enjoy owning a nicely made watch, the same way people like owning antiques and other similar things.

Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's stupid. Most people would laugh at you for overclocking a computer, but here we all are...

But it's not just about telling the time. Watches of all kinds are made differently and attention to detail can be painstakingly high and people appreciate that kind of feature and the styling that comes with it.

There is no right or wrong,. just user preference. What is wrong though is a £100 hoodie :p

It would be incredibly rare for rolexes to increase in value over time, for the reasons Raymond Lin mentioned. Only those made with rare materials/extremely limited editions are worth considdering for investment. A mate inherited a 1920's white gold omega, he wears it daily, now that is an investment.

That's only if the car spends every minute of its life doing 70mph. But it doesn't, does it? It has to stop sometime, and then start again.

A watch however, is stuck at "70mph", for eternity.

And a better quality watch, material and what not, the end result does not tell better time. That is the point of the invention of the watch, to tell time.

The water resistance...that is marketing, you can get £500 watches that goes down just as deep as a £5k watch. You think you are really paying for the water resistance?

It's a piece of jewellery for men, lets be honest here and stop kidding ourselves.

Personally I wouldn't be looking at a Rolex. There are many watch makes out there.

I completely agree with that, they could buy paintings to look at, that doesn't do a thing either.

But you can't compare a watch to a car. Designer Handbags, yes. That comparison would be much closer. They both hold things, but they don't hold things better.

My watch will be passed on to my son when he reaches a sensible age, probably 21.

It wouldn't be the same giving him a cheapy Casio :p
