^According to robbieg it's OK to poke fun at people if you're him but if people generally banter among themselves then how dare they subject him to such displays of "tripe" :p

People get told off for stock images, yet this kind of tripe is allowed to persist.

have you seen your posting at all

The reason for stock images as I have yet to receive the speakers or USB-DAC. And as for the chair it lies in a large box in a corner of a room not to be opened until the 29th of this month which is my birthday and this is a gift. The child in me does not open presents before the occasion. So a monster I will remain.

So, why not wait till you can open them?

With this thing do you then run a bundle of 5 SATA cables externally into the side of your server's case connected to an add-in SATA (Raid controller presumably) card?

goes in your 5.25 bays iirc

then cables go from the back to your mobo sockets

Oh i see, that sucks. Although i suppose it could be used externally.

The reason i ask is that i am building a new server for my home environment and i am considering what to do re storage, it would be great to be able to use cheap SATA disks. I plan to use a proper enterprise server, but i am thinking that that thing could perhaps sit on top with an external bundle of SATA cables connected to a SATA Raid controller in the server.

NAS box?

i think that thing just keeps the drives cool/maybe adds hot swapable functionality (there are others that do.)

there will certainly be something in rack dimensions. they certainly tend to have a lot of storage :p there are ones that conenct via PCIE it sems

i dont know how long sata can be before it degrades though.

You could use a RAID controller with an external mini SAS connection and plug it into it. But that's pointless as you'd have to run power out of the psu to it too, so you might as well just get a JBOD rack. Any "enterprise" server you get will simply be a rack unit using single bay hot swap kits instead of 5 in 3 bay kits like bsoltans. I have two 5 bay kits that will be going into my tower when my dremel finally arrives and I can cut off some tabs of metal that are in the way so they'll fit.
