NAS box?

i think that thing just keeps the drives cool/maybe adds hot swapable functionality (there are others that do.)

there will certainly be something in rack dimensions. they certainly tend to have a lot of storage :p there are ones that conenct via PCIE it sems

i dont know how long sata can be before it degrades though.

A NAS box isnt the same thing, i dont want a NAS, they are not expandable or anything like as flexible as windows server. Do you have any recommendations as to better enclosures than that would be, you mention finding some other ones? :)

You could use a RAID controller with an external mini SAS connection and plug it into it. But that's pointless as you'd have to run power out of the psu to it too, so you might as well just get a JBOD rack. Any "enterprise" server you get will simply be a rack unit using single bay hot swap kits instead of 5 in 3 bay kits like bsoltans. I have two 5 bay kits that will be going into my tower when my dremel finally arrives and I can cut off some tabs of metal that are in the way so they'll fit.

An enterprise drive shelf will run into thousands, an icy box is about £100 :p Running power would be fine, i could braid a power run alongside the data cables so it would look like one cable running between the two boxes. As above, do you have any recommendation as to anything more suitable than the icy box used externally? :)

With this thing do you then run a bundle of 5 SATA cables externally into the side of your server's case connected to an add-in SATA (Raid controller presumably) card?

It sits in the front drive bays of my case, as Tefal described. It allows you to put 5 drives in 3 slots, making the most use of the space. The cables then connect to whichever ports you have, I'm using the motherboard and a SATA card.

(excuse the dust)

Oh i see, that sucks. Although i suppose it could be used externally.

The reason i ask is that i am building a new server for my home environment and i am considering what to do re storage, it would be great to be able to use cheap SATA disks. I plan to use a proper enterprise server, but i am thinking that that thing could perhaps sit on top with an external bundle of SATA cables connected to a SATA Raid controller in the server.

Well it doesn't suck, is this is the intended purpose. :p;)

Why wouldn't you put the 'cheap' SATA disks inside the case for the server? I bought the Xigmatek Utgard because it can house three of these in the front (and was reasonable price). I just have it hooked up to an m-ATX board with a bit of RAM and an i3 processor. Running Win Server allows me plenty of customisability and expandability.

That was the same decision I came up with, you spend a lot on a NAS box but unless you spend thousands you just have to buy more boxes.

This box could sit outside a case, it takes 5 SATA cables and 3 MOLEX cables. The other possibility would be to use any cases that have e-SATA that you could then link directly to your board/controller card.

I still don't really know why you'd want to keep your enclosure outside of the case, if you want a 'rack' server, you can usually fit drives in them or just keep an eye on second hand kit and you'll be able to house everything in that.

Are you running unraid bsoltan? I have a pair of Norco SS-500s that are going into a Zalman MS800. Not using unraid myself, but I saw a similar build / configuration on the lime site. I'll probably be running ZFS.

I guess ultimately perhaps i should just bundle all of the drives into a 2U server wherever they will fit, this seems a bit messy though as they would be floating around everywhere inside the case. Using an external thing like the icybox mounts them safely with some cooling, leaves the server as it was intended, allows me to use a 1U item instead of anything larger, etc.

I dont want anything custom built such as an enthusiast case with a cobbled together motherboard etc, i would like to stick to stock HP or Dell enterprise servers for the chassis ideally as they are what i am used to and have access to. With these I can have the system running on the onboard SAS setup with a nice hot spare, access to a proper DRAC/iLO, etc etc.

Another option ofc is to use a 2nd old useless 1U chassis and gut the whole thing, and just put all the drives into that :)

Nope, I'm running Windows Server 2008. I'm just more familiar with Windows and I can setup and install other things rather than just storage, at least that was the plan when I started a few years ago.

Ah, fair enough. So the hardware part is sorted and it is just accessing the drives. I guess the 1U chassis are designed to be ran in multiples to be able to store all the drives. :D
I wonder if you could get an empty rack and just run cables to the drives.

At least they're not chinese knock off katanas I suppose. I remember a guy laying a floor for me several years ago tell me he collected movie sword replicas. Next day he turned up with Conan the Barbarian's sword. Guy was mad, so I had to pretend that it was really interesting.

I feel your pain. Almost all cheap replica swords are just terrible things and handle nothing like their real-life counterparts. They are inflexible, brittle and heavy and sometimes have painfully slim tangs. Great for hanging on a wall but not good for much else.

Stumbled upon one of my favourite albums of all time in a charity shop today, as I was flicking through the vinyl, not bad for 99p! The sleeve is dirty but the vinyl itself is in great shape and plays well, which is where it counts.

PS4 thumb sticks, heard (and seen) horror stories with the rubber coming off. Paid a fiver at Game;

Oh, and a shiny white PS4. The Wii U is getting relegated (not for long, Super Smash Bros will make sure of that).

Also picked up Lonely The Brave's new album, 5UB put a recommendation up for one of their songs (The Blue, The Green). Well worth a listen.
