What's wrong with Google Maps? (You can guess I have not a clue what you're.planning to do with them)

Heathen!

When it comes to topography, Google is awful compared to OS.

Lets take a look at what Google has for the area around Lynton & Lynmouth in the Exmoor area:

And here is the OS National Parks layer (the purple lines are areas that you can walk down so when you plot a route, it snaps to the path):

And here is an Explorer map like the ones I purchased:

Now tell me what's wrong with Google.

I wonder how long until google does offer a similar level of detail.

Given the pace at which things move with them, I'd guess a couple of years tops. I might be underestimating the level of detail (that last screenshot has a lot of information), but they did manage to do streetview for most of the developed world.

Google maps is absolutely ****. you can forget footpaths or cycle routes.

Bing maps is good for UK, as they have 1:25000 OS map layer which obviously show such things as it's same as the maps he's purchased.

What they all for anyway?

Hike and bike (is it open maps they use?) maps are pretty good and free, but UI is pretty poor. Best route creator I've seen is http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php but it's far from ideal.

I would guess a hell of a lot longer than that, it would be easy for them to add such layers and they haven't. It would be easy for them to add national trails in and they haven't. There's no interest from them and they see it as to niche an area.

Fair point, I guess they probably could if they set their mind to it though

I know, I didn't know people bought them anymore. I thought they only existed as old empty boxes from previous purchases

Nice link to something that hasn't arrived yet...monster !

I was about to mention that fact also... until I noticed that it had been written by a well respected Capodecina, so I chickened out!

You're a braver man than I am, Gunga Din! ;)

Hey!!! I'm excited about a new toy :D

Also, if I was to be pedantic...the thread title says 'items purchased'...I've purchased it ;)
