One of the rubber arm sleeves of the trusty sunglasses I bought in France for about £30 five years ago went missing today. Tried looking for them but instead decided that perhaps it was time to replace them anyway.

Popped into John Lewis (20% off sunglasses this weekend), treated myself to a nice pair or polarised RayBans. Look pretty smart and whereas I'm not sure my old one were polarised, these definitely are - can see a weird pattern in car glass when I look through it now.

Sounds about right for polarised sunglasses! You'll also notice the difference if you look through a pool of water / the sky.

Indeed, I thought the old ones were as well, as I noticed they tended to reduce glare quite well when looking at the clouds in the sky. And when I bought them at the opticians in Cahors, I did ask if they were le polariséd, and got a nod of agreement from the non-English speaking assistant. I guess my French needs some work.

Few more additions to my naval history library purchased this month. Focus on getting my Jutland knowledge to it's peak and with it being 100 years since the battle on Tuesday there are lots of new books with fresh perspectives being published.

Having a clear out and came across some war books that were my dad's, was going to take the to the charity shop so don't know if you're interested?

Weird request I know but if there are any on cold war aviation 40's to 90's I'd be interested if housey doesn't take an interest in them?

Tony Buttler is worth a look if you haven't already btw. plenty of interesting and never seen before designs from the end of WW2 and into the cold war from all 3 main players. If you like cold war X plane stuff, he's very good.

Thanks, will look him up.

Weirder again I used to work for a guy called Tony Buttler, making wooden wastepaper baskets. Its been an odd sunday.

It's very easy to test if sunglasses are polarised by looking at your phone while wearing them. If you can't see the screen (or very little of) while holding the phone in a landscape orientation, then you have polarised lenses. LCD screens emit light wave in one particular orientation - polarised lenses only let through light in one particular orientation. therefore, you should be able to rotate your phone such that you can't see the screen when wearing your sunglasses. Though they might let a little blue light through.

They'll also probably say that they're polarised, along with the filter category on the inside of one of the arm.

If the above doesn't happen, you've been mis-sold some very expensive sunglasses I'm afraid.

Thanks. I knew roughly how they worked, but didn't know you could test with a phone. I just tried and you're right. You can still see the screen, but as it tilts, certain bands on the screen are blocked and the colour becomes distorted. And yes, they are marked as polarised on the arm, and the lens, and the RayBan website.

And in the scheme of things they weren't massively expensive either. I didn't mind paying a little extra for a decent pair, but whilst I was browsing, I found the price of some frames eye watering (ironically).

Strangely I can see my phone better at landscape, the opposite. Which is annoying!

Think it depends on the device. With my phone screen, the colours distort but it's still essentially visible. With my PC monitor and TV, turning the lenses through 90 degrees does indeed block all light from screen.

Just bought myself this, collect on the 12th

Not my number 1 color choice for sure but so few in the UK, super low miles and to be honest the color two tone does not bother me to much at all
