Impending redundancy, whats the crack?

Sorry to hear it - same boat as me. but surely this is something you should be asking your employer, not OCUK.

I wouldnt even be thinking about what my redundancy payment was, I'd be on the phone to everybody who runs HGV's in the area like a shot and getting my ass out of there, You could probably have yourself a new job lined up within a day, and crucially take up any jobs that are available before all the other drivers at the site decide to do anything about it.

I got about £2500 from Asda when it shut a warehouse down, had 7 years service but was on part time contract when it shut so lost on out 3 years full time.

I'm off on holiday this week, and will ask when I go back next Monday. :)
Do you have an entitlement to paid annual leave? If so, avoid using it - they'll have to pay you it on termination. It's liable for income tax and NI, but it's quite valuable.

I'm coming to the end of a 22 person redundancy and am the employee representative, so I've become somewhat accustomed to the current rules and regulations if you have any questions.

Sorry to hear that, remember you might get 4 weeks notice pay aswell as your redundancy money if they dont want you to work it.

Im also being made redundant after 9 years. My final day is 12th March and am quite happy about it aswell to be honest.

That sucks mate :(

If Middlewhich is a good location for you, have a look at my old employer AAG. They pay well and have a depot not far from Tesco. No idea if they have any jobs, but it's worth a phone call. They have days/nights/weekends. I'm on my stupid phone and can just about figure how to reply to a thread, however I shall get you the address and number when i surface after my night shift. I was working between 40-50 hours a week, for around £25,000 per anum, this was no nights out day shift.

Just taking 7 days leave that I had to take or lose before the end of the financial year.

I get paid leave but won't be owed much by June 1st I'd have thought.

If I think of any questions - or get any from the lads when i return to work, I may well take you upon that, thanks. :)

Cheers fozzy, any info appreciated. :) If Middlewich is where work is, it'll do! :D - I'm in Kidsgrove.

I'd heard about this a couple of weeks ago, didn't realise you operated from that particular depot R420LA6X2/4MNA :(

I'm sure they'll probably offer alternatives during the 90 day consultation period, I understand the union is also involved in these talks as well. Unfortunatley not all of the alternatives offered will be suitable for each individual, at least (as you've said) you are more employable than most given your skills and experience as a driver.

Legal minimum is one weeks pay (capped at £380) for each year served. This is tax free. The calculation is a little more complicated if you were under 22 or over 40 at the time, but neither of these apply to you.

It should be made clear however that this is the statutory minimum only. Your employee representative (or union, as appropriate) has a duty to seek the best possible outcome for all employees they represent - be that redeployment elsewhere or a better redundancy package. Whether you will get a better package, especially under current conditions, is debatable, but if you don't ask, you don't get.

Officially you will have been placed at risk of redundancy, and not (yet) made redundant. That's the whole point of the consultation process - they can't make you redundant until they have consulted.

Having been given notice of actual redundancy, you may be required to work your notice period (typically one week per years service - on full pay but a maximum of 12 weeks, but you should check your contract), or you may get offered PILON (pay in lieu of notice) which, if correctly negotiated, can also be made into a tax-free payment.

Good luck and hope you get the best possible outcome for you.

I was placed at risk of redundancy in mid-November. It felt horrible at the time but I found another role in the company and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise - I've been in the new job three months now and enjoyed almost every minute of it.

Sorry to hear about your impending redundancy.

It also explains why we've had a couple of phone calls from drivers seeking work. If there was a job going here, I'd let you know, but we have Volvos. :p

BTW I heard that Stobarts were opening a new depot in Widnes - 700 jobs apparently.

Stobart are opening a huge new depot in Widnes, unfortunately for me and the others at Middlewich, the Tesco depot at Middleton in Manchester has recently closed and their work is transferring to Widnes, Middlewiches work is transferring to Goole in Yorkshire.

I spoke to a guy I used to work with, he ran out of Darwen with me, then transferd to Middlewhich. He's not entirely sure if there are jobs going or not but a guy left a day job recently, and another is due to retire from his night shift next month. He reckons it's worth nipping in and giving them your CV, or just make enquires.

Like a pleb I forgot to ask him for the postal address and phone number but you basically drive through Thomas Hardies yard to get to it. The address for Thomas Hardie volvo is...

Road Beta
Brooks Lane Industrial Estate
Middlewich, Cheshire

If you need any more info, give me a shout, like I say there is no guarantee but it's worth a try. I forgot to mention, the night lads are on considerably more money than the day shift. The pay was £32,000 for roughly the same hours.
