I bought some Massdrop Sennheiser HD58X which work out at about £114 + shipping and I’ve just had an e-mail (which has the correct refs) from ccl pay stating that I owe something like £32 for customs entry and import VAT.

It looks legit but something doesn’t quite sit right, also I thought £114 would be under any thresh hold?

Import VAT applies for anything over £15, customs duty for anything over £135

That’s what a 5 second Google tells me, anyway.

The threshold is actually £15.

Thanks all, two lessons learned.

1) I can’t return to massdrop (unless faulty)
2) Thought the import thresh holds were higher!

Anyway, think the headphones are going straight to MM

I imported something which cost about £37 from the US and had to pay £15 to Royal Mail, £8 of that was a "handling fee". At the moment it's not really worth buying anything outside of the EU unless you have no choice and are prepared to be shafted.

Take the effort to understand it and you'll probably find something you can challenge it on. I've challenged every Customs charge i've ever had and they put the charge on hold and then never bother to come back to you.

Normally they try and charge duty on the shipping charges, when they should only be charging vat.

In less than 2 months, there is no point buying anything outside the UK!

Importing from the USA is only really worth doing when the exchange rate is in our favour unless you absolutely can’t source the item anywhere else.
